TOKYO, JAPAN, 28 October, 2022

Deloitte Tohmatsu Group (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO Kenichi Kimura, hereafter Deloitte Tohmatsu) held a tree-planting event in collaboration with Shirataka Town, Yamagata Prefecture, on October 22, to make an impact to a better environment, as part of an initiative to stimulate ethical conversation internally. With the cooperation of Deloitte Tohmatsu Well-being Foundation (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO Gentoku Yoshikawa), Deloitte Tohmatsu donated the cost of seedlings and maintenance to Shirataka-machi shinrin-ringyo saisei kyogikai (Shirataka Forest and Forestry Revitalization Council). Deloitte Tohmatsu Group Chair of the Board, partners and employees joined the event and planted trees.

In terms of well-being, this initiative was carried out with the two objectives: enhancing the ethical working environment for our staff and enriching the forest resources for the environment. Over the 5 weeks in the last summer, examples of ethical dialogue, named "Ethics Talk," were shared within the company based on the five themes listed in Deloitte's Shared Values. When partners and employees had talks, they informed on a platform. During the campaign period, illustrations of trees grew according to the number of times they had conversations, so as to gain continuing internal interests. As a result, the total number of communications reached approximately 3,400. In response, Deloitte Tohmatsu decided to plant an equal number of trees in an area large enough to cover about 3,400 trees (About 2 hectares, comparable to the surface of almost three soccer fields). In the autumn event, several hundred of these trees were planted with the great support of Shirataka Town, Okitama ringyo kabushiki-gaisha (Okitama Forestry Co., Ltd) and people who involve in the restoration of local forestry.

Under the leadership of Mayor Seishichi Sato, the town of Shirataka in Yamagata Prefecture has promoted restructuring its production activities in forestry, which have been stagnant for a long time, into a sustainable form. In the wake of the heavy rain disasters in 2013 and 2014, the town has revitalized its forestry industry from the perspective of conservation. Their comprehensive efforts include the restructuring of the timber industry, use of wood materials and education on the quality of wood products and the importance of their use. Deloitte Tohmatsu hopes to contribute to the further initiatives, and the town accepted the donation.

Deloitte Tohmatsu has established a safe and secure work environment based on the Shared Values for its partners and employees and encouraged each and every one of them to make an impact that matters. In order to represent that Ethics is Deloitte's fundamental philosophy of uncompromising commitment, the group uses the illustration of tree (described on the right side), which can grow lushly and flourish for a long time because of the support of its roots that are strongly stretched across the earth. Besides, various initiatives have been undertaken to ensure that each member perceives Ethics as his or her personal matter, such as the award for members who embody Shared Values and the "Declaration of Behavioral Change" which is announced by the executives.
