Hourua Pae Rau, our Māori services team, continues to support our client organisations to realise their Te Tiriti obligations and to implement culturally safe strategies when working with Māori. We also strive to enable Māori to positively impact communities. Working together and forging strong partnerships is an essential part of this. In pursuit of partnering with Māori, government, and businesses, we draw inspiration from the recently coined whakatauākī (proverb) from the late Kingi Tuheitia Potatau Te Wherowhero Tuawhitu: "We need to focus on getting in the waka and working together. Mana Motuhake (self-determination) has room for everyone."
Kotahitanga, the spirit of working as one, is evident in our external partnerships with leaders in Te Ao Māori (the Māori world), such as the engagement of Ngāti Whatua Orakei to hold and undertake the opening of Whiria Te Kaha – 1 Queen Street our new Tāmaki Makarau office, and our newly forged partnership with the Māori Education Trust to better enable Tīheru scholarships.
Our Hourua Pae Rau team is supported by our Kaihautū (paddlers in the waka), our community of leaders who share knowledge and insights across the regions through activities and regular whāriki kōrero (monthly meetings). Our Kokiri team of competent Te Reo Māori speakers and advisors of tikanga (cultural practices) support our clients and communities in client engagements. This year, our Kaihautū community instilled an annual newspaper, Te Karere o Hourua Pae Rau, to ensure our collective stories of impact are celebrated by everyone at the firm.
Our cultural confidence journey is accelerating with growing participation in Te Reo classes annually and week-long celebrations for Matariki (Māori new year) and Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori language week). Mihi whakatau has been woven into our onboarding experience, welcoming all new starters with an authentic experience that helps reinforce Deloitte New Zealand’s engagement in genuine cultural practices.
Deloitte New Zealand is an authentically Aotearoa business. Our pride in our cultural confidence journey continues to be forged through collective mahi and kotahitanga – a united way to a prosperous future.
Our people make a meaningful impact every day through the work they do for our clients. Aligned with our societal investment, our people also contribute their time and skills to pro bono engagements, supporting a range of exceptional organisations across Aotearoa.
Two signature initiatives that support and drive pro bono engagements in our communities include The Impact Accelerator and Good Thinking.
The Impact Accelerator supports purpose-driven organisations in enhancing their social, environmental, and financial impact. The initiative connects these organisations with professional services and access to mentorship and other assistance from our skilled professionals.
In FY24, we worked with the founders of With Impact, a company disrupting corporate gifting with for-purpose brands and charitable gift options. We helped the team develop a financial strategy as well as sustainable metrics and methodologies for tracking the environmental and social impact they generate through their work.
Good Thinking is our Consulting business unit’s signature initiative, selecting projects based on the potential for impactful outcomes, alignment with our WorldImpact strategy and opportunities to develop new skills for our people. In FY24, Good Thinking supported 28 projects over a total of 1,496 pro bono hours. Highlights included supporting two charitable organisations with a focus on rainbow people’s mental health and supporting the Wellington City Mission’s Whakamaru project – a transformational community facility available to all.
Read Good Thinking’s story of impact here with Whakamaru. Pro bono engagements assist us on our journey to support projects with meaningful outcomes, in alignment with our WorldImpact strategy. Our people are proud to contribute time and skills to exceptional organisations across Aotearoa which have an impact on our communities across the nation.
In August 2024, Deloitte New Zealand published an in-depth report assessing the international performance of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and offering strategies for a more resilient future for the city.
Benchmarking Tāmaki Makaurau: Fostering global city liveability represents a three-year collaboration between Deloitte, the Committee for Auckland, and Tātaki Auckland Unlimited. The report offers invaluable insights into the city's performance and challenges on the global stage and benchmarks Auckland against comparable international cities like Brisbane, Vancouver, and Helsinki.
Despite Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland's well-known reputation for its laid-back lifestyle, natural splendour, and exceptional visitor experiences, the report's revelations are eye-opening. It casts a spotlight on critical deficiencies across multiple domains, encompassing infrastructure planning, investment allure, talent retention, productivity, innovation, safety, and housing affordability.
Deloitte Partner Anthony Ruakere helped provide a kaupapa Māori and Indigenous lens to the report – in particular, how the Indigenous populations within each of the compared cities perform not only relative to each other but also relative to the non-indigenous populations.
The pressing challenges underscore the necessity for thoughtful and strategic action to drive improvement. The report aims to strengthen consensus between government, the council, and Aucklanders on the priorities and system-wide changes needed and articulates a comprehensive approach to tackling the challenges.

Good infrastructure – from power productivity to clean water and public services – has the power to transform our society and improve lives.
But how do we define what “good infrastructure” looks like?
Infrastructure for Good is a first-of-its-kind research initiative that aims to help benchmark what good infrastructure looks like, drive awareness of the benefits, and create a roadmap to enable better decision-making.
Deloitte teamed up with Economist Impact and Duke University to compare the infrastructure ecosystems of more than 30 countries. Although the study did not include New Zealand, there are valuable insights from the report into how infrastructure can impact the social, environmental, and economic wellbeing of a society.
Good infrastructure planning must take care of what communities need today and consider long-term effects on society, the environment, and the economy. The Infrastructure for Good Barometer helps us see where infrastructure is making a positive difference, encouraging progress, and guiding better decisions. It enables us to see how good - and not-so-good infrastructure planning could impact New Zealand based on real-world data, prompting questions and ideas about how we could plan, manage, and implement infrastructure projects closer to home.

Deloitte's ongoing relationship with Institute of Public Administration New Zealand (IPANZ) shows the value of being connected. IPANZ is an independent organisation that supports and promotes a strong public sector through connecting people and ideas.
We understand the importance of a robust public sector and have been a foundation sponsor of IPANZ since 2016.
IPANZ's vision is to create a thriving public sector that can improve the wellbeing of all New Zealanders. They work to inform, inspire, and challenge public sector professionals at all levels – building skills, knowledge, performance, connections, and careers – and to strengthen the public administration system in which they work.
As a leading adviser to a variety of public sector clients, we believe IPANZ is an important independent voice for the public sector. They help shape the agenda for our clients and support public servants in delivering on their mission with the best tools, skill sets, and a high level of experience.
Our sponsorship includes providing knowledge and thought leadership from outside the sector. We offer opportunities to IPANZ members to build connections through unique events, workshops, and articles.
Our mutual activities provide a platform for debate on emerging and relevant issues, a forum for networking, ideas, learning, and development, and an authoritative voice for increasing public understanding of the public administration system and the work the public sector does.

Techweek is New Zealand's premier technology festival. The nationwide programme is developed and curated by NZTech in their communities across the country and features hundreds of events catering to diverse audiences. It provides a platform for individuals and organisations to connect, exchange ideas, and explore the future possibilities and opportunities of technology.
Deloitte was proud to be a Strategic Techweek Partner again this year, building on last year's successful sponsorship. For the 2024 event, Deloitte represented the GenAI pillar to showcase the exciting potential in this space and to provide a cross-industry insight into what New Zealand organisations are doing in AI.
Deloitte New Zealand Partner David Lovatt said that it was a unique opportunity to share how Deloitte uses technology to solve client problems.
GenAI is a rapidly evolving technology with the power to revolutionise the nation’s productivity and transform how we do business. “The AI landscape is constantly evolving and we’re working just as fast to stay up to date ourselves, so we can pass on our learnings from this exciting technological advancement to all those who have an interest in the potential of GenAI and the possibilities it unlocks for our future. Through our work, we hope to empower people to make informed and well-rounded decisions for the safe use of GenAI in their organisations,” said Lovatt.
Techweek 2024 was an opportunity for Deloitte to showcase our amazing people, celebrate the breadth of our firm's capability and impact across the technology ecosystem, and shine a light on our clients and their technology efforts.
During the past year, we also furthered Deloitte’s "partnership with purpose" with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which applies Deloitte’s deep management and business consulting acumen to help the IOC realise the possibilities of its Olympic Agenda 2020+5 and help drive initiatives as broad as digital transformation, eGames strategy, and the IOC AI Agenda. It also includes projects related to sustainability; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and athlete career transition and well-being. In addition, Deloitte and the IOC launched The First Effect, a co-branded campaign that sets out to create a new metric for success beyond the podium, measuring the transformative impact of firsts that happen at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The campaign features the stories of trailblazing athletes from around the world—including Sarah Attar, the first female to represent Saudi Arabia in athletics at the Olympic Games, and South African swimmer Natalie Du Toit, the first amputee swimmer to qualify for the Olympic Games.
Following the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, the IOC and Deloitte announced an expansion of their Worldwide Olympic Partnership. For the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 through to the Olympic Games Brisbane 2032, Deloitte will take on the role of Games Technology Integration Partner for the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games, and the Youth Olympic Games. Deloitte will help advance the IOC’s vision of establishing a new integrated technology infrastructure and Games platform to enhance and secure the Olympic and Paralympic Games’ technology operations for the future.
