Modern cyber-physical products have a lifecycle that is managed by IT systems, called systems of records, in PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and ALM (Application Lifecycle Management). As part of the digitalization process, it is important to consolidate this database and facilitate more open access to data with applications or technologies such as big data. This improves the continuity of data along the value chain and enables the development of use cases for the digital twin that will drive business success. PLM and ALM systems cover the entire engineering change management process from ideation to end-of-life of any product.

We use our deep process and technology expertise to advise our customers on how to optimize value streams in product innovation, development, manufacturing and project management to meet digital challenges. We work closely with leading system vendors to help clients select, design, specify and implement ALM/PLM systems.

We translate our clients' business strategy and organization into a holistic architecture by redesigning the organization for future technologies and improve our clients' visibility and efficiency by selecting the best data architecture and data exchange for each use case.

We operate PLM systems for our customers by providing the necessary solution architecture and managing the technical setup and rollout. We bring expertise in areas such as process landscape, research and development, solution architecture, implementation planning, data migration and change management.

Process Industry

Today’s process industries (e.g., Consumer Goods, Chemicals, or Pharma) are facing several challenges including regulatory compliance, sustainability concerns, consumer expectations and behaviors, cost management and the need to accelerate time-to-market. Addressing these challenges requires strategic planning, agility, innovations and investments in technology and digital transformation. PLM, LIMS, and (Gen-)AI platforms are part of the essential digital infrastructure to drive digital transformation in the process industries and ultimately address the above challenges.

While many process industry organizations have made significant progress towards their digital transformation in the past few years, a new challenge has emerged: The presence of numerous point-to-point integrations, i.e. integrations between two distinct systems, applications, or services that enable direct communication and data exchange. However, point-to-point integrations become complex and difficult to manage as an organization (and therefore, the number of interconnected systems) grows. For long-term scalability and efficiency, transitioning towards a digital thread approach is imperative to stay competitive. And it is a pre-requirement to enable digital cases like AI accelerated product development, digital twins, or business in the Metaverse.

At Deloitte, we have successfully facilitated our clients’ transition towards a digital thread by leveraging our extensive expertise in the related technologies, industry-specific knowledge, strategic consulting capabilities and the awareness that the heart of any successful digital transformation is the dedication and talent of your people. These capabilities allow us to provide our clients with end-to-end services that include process consulting, project delivery, solutions, and organizational change management. Moreover, throughout the digital transformation process, we align our efforts with your business objectives and strategic goals, ensuring that our solutions drive meaningful and sustainable value.

The ongoing transition to complex cyber-physical products and their value chains, as well as mastering the associated complexity of interdisciplinary development processes, requires the cross-industry introduction of both technical and organizational systems engineering processes and methods. This integrative approach forces a new way of thinking and acting in companies by the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration along the value chain across several levels of company boundaries. Systems engineering enables the heterogeneous customer requirements and the necessary functionalities of the overall system to be defined early in the development process through stringent processes such as requirements and architecture management. With the system as a whole in mind, the design can then be continued at the subsystem and component level in coordination with the respective domain specific stakeholders. It is also important to think about system development from the end. Specifically, how can system integration, validation and verification in the product development process be designed efficiently and in accordance with the intended rollout plans, and how can the systems be released?

Our expertise enables us to help organizations deliver exceptional software solutions that meet the highest quality standards. By partnering with Deloitte, you can expect improved customer satisfaction, reduced costs, enhanced competitiveness, and effective risk mitigation.

We focus on three major disciplines and approach client challenges accordingly: Software Quality Governance, Software Product Quality and Software Process Quality.

The core challenge that we address in Software Quality Governance is the need for a comprehensive and adaptable approach to ensuring that high quality software systems are delivered. This includes strategic alignment, optimized organizational structures, and effective quality assurance practices.

The key issue in Software Product Quality is the lack of clearly defined goals, metrics, and a maturity model, which can lead to ambiguity, inconsistency, and limited understanding of the ability of software products to deliver high quality results.

The main issue we address in Software Process Quality is the lack of visibility, communication, and control that leads to inefficiency and inconsistency. By ensuring regulatory compliance, identifying key gaps, and using the Deloitte Process Improvement Framework, we aim to establish effective and sustainable process improvement for high quality products.

Moreover, we combine deep theoretical A-SPICE model knowledge with extensive systems engineering project experience to develop tailored and pragmatic hands-on solutions in your projects or process landscape.

Our ecosystems are directly affected by climate change. If we address climate change through decarbonization but neglect biodiversity, environmental problems will persist. To ensure a sustainable future, we must understand how living species interact with water, the atmosphere and other natural systems, and work towards protecting and restoring these ecosystems.

To do this, we must adopt a circular economy mindset. Traditionally, products are produced, used, and discarded in a linear pattern. By embracing circular economy principles, we can extend the life of products, reduce waste, and increase reusability. The goal is to create a world without waste. Companies should not only focus on their own operations, but also work with suppliers, competitors, and customers to implement circular practices. This requires both vertical and horizontal integration.

To help our clients achieve circularity, we optimize material use and recycling cycles. This includes improvements in organization, logistics, production, and other business functions. We also consider the circular practices of suppliers, competitors, and customers to ensure that each part of the value chain contributes to circularity.

Another tool we use is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which is a scientific method that measures the environmental impact of a product by analyzing each step of its life cycle - from sourcing raw material to manufacturing, use, and disposal. It provides accurate information on a product's carbon and water footprint, resource and energy consumption, waste, and other impacts such as toxicity and pollution. We help create a roadmap for reducing a product's environmental impact through detailed life cycle assessments.

Data-driven decisions are essential for circular products, and this is where the Digital Product Passport comes in.

The DPP is a proposed tool for collecting, storing, and sharing product-level data throughout its lifecycle, including raw material sources, emissions footprint, and more.

A specific example that we have been working on with our customers is battery passports. The digital battery passport will be required for all light-duty vehicle batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and EV batteries placed on the market or put into service from February 2027. According to EU Regulation 2023/1542, the battery passport must contain comprehensive product design data, such as the product's carbon footprint, material composition and information on repair, disassembly or general manufacturing, as well as dynamic data related to the determination of the battery's state of health, in order to ensure transparency and traceability throughout the battery's life cycle. This information must be carefully documented and made available at any time from the effective date as soon as it is requested by an applicant (e.g. authorities, battery owners, remanufacturers, recyclers, specific actors) until the battery reaches end-of-life. Deloitte can support economic operators or suppliers in the creation of battery or multi-purpose product passports with in depth expertise in product data asset management and green lifecycle engineering.
