Future of ERP

A study on the challenges and opportunities of ERP systems by 2030

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems serve as crucial software solutions, consolidating core business processes of various functional areas into a unified platform. However, with rapidly evolving and disruptive technologies such as AI, the landscape of ERP systems is poised for transformation. This raises questions about how ERP systems will evolve by 2030 and the implications for enterprise resource management. The Deloitte study “Future of ERP” explores what that future might look like.
A Study on the Challenges and Opportunities of ERP Systems by 2030

The Future of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are highly optimized software applications managing various company resources, operations, and data to improve productivity, efficiency, and transparency. They seamlessly integrate functional areas into a cohesive platform to enable accurate cross-functional data flows in real-time. Disruptive technologies have brought us to the brink of a technological revolution as the landscape of enterprise resource management continues to evolve. Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and data security are redefining the rules and parameters of ERP systems.

Our study “Future of ERP” builds on the Deloitte study “Future of the Intelligent Enterprise to 2035”, that includes hypotheses and strategic options considered universal across various future scenarios. One of the study’s main hypotheses on potential game changers for businesses relates to intelligent enterprise platforms. These will enable companies to integrate and orchestrate data, processes, and resources across multiple systems. Moreover, agility, adaptability, and data-driven decisionmaking are essential to respond to changes in market conditions. Innovative partnerships, open ecosystems for collaboration, and a focus on cybersecurity should be top priorities to ensure security in this dynamic environment.

In our study these findings are viewed through - the lens of ERP. This study also considers a time frame up to 2030 for near-term developments. It aims to explore the trajectory of ERP systems and discern the implications for modern businesses by drawing on a three-tiered research methodology. In the first step a broad spectrum of existing scientific literature was dissected to gain thorough insight into our principal research question. Focusing on our mission objectives, we crafted a comprehensive survey aimed at a diverse audience of stakeholders. More than 200 participants, composed of decisionmakers, users, consultants, and students, shed light on the future of ERP systems up to 2030. Their perspectives provide valuable insight into new opportunities and challenges that point to a promising future.

This allowed us to explore the current ERP landscape and draw its future contours based on the stakeholders' perspective. Finally, we conducted in-depth interviews with subject matter experts (C-level and academics) from various industries to deepen our understanding. In addition to human voices, we have also included the “opinions” of three AI chat bots (ChatGPT, Bard, Luminous) on the future development of ERP as the quality and informative value of AI has improved greatly.

In summary, our study explores the changes within the traditional ERP landscape in the face of rapid technological advances. It aims to guide businesses through the promising, yet ambiguous path ahead. As we venture deeper into this unprecedented era of digital transformation, our study's insights will become increasingly helpful.
