"I’ve always been really interested in technology, so having the opportunity to work with some of the world’s biggest tech companies is fascinating to me."
Marcus, Director, Ethics and Regulatory Compliance
What is your role?
I’m a Director in Ethics and Regulatory Compliance. Our team supports companies with large digital platforms to effectively manage the new regulations they’re facing. It’s an unprecedented time in the technology industry, with many changes to laws and new rules being implemented by regulators. As well as helping our clients with changes to their business, we also help to ensure that these changes are embedded into the wider culture and way of doing things. I’ve always been really interested in technology, so having the opportunity to work with some of the world’s biggest tech companies is fascinating to me.
What are you doing now?
I’m currently working within a technology company’s compliance function, bringing in expertise across several different areas of regulation. Being totally immersed in the client’s environment is great, because you gain a more in-depth understanding of their corporate culture and focus areas. It’s a very relationship-based business and I enjoy having the opportunity to grow and develop these. Since joining as a BrightStart I’ve worked my way up to director level and been hugely supported along the way. I’ve always had amazing mentors, as well as plenty of training opportunities. I’ve moved teams now, but I also had the chance to take the ACA qualification when I joined.
"I’ve always really enjoyed helping people to solve complex problems - that’s why I enjoy the role so much."
Mishka, Assistant Director, Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory
How did you get your job at Deloitte?
I grew up in Cape Town in South Africa, but I’d always dreamed of coming to London to work. Before joining Deloitte in 2019, I was working for an Investment Bank at home. When a former colleague told me there was an opening here to work on a project across London and the Netherlands, I jumped at the chance to apply! I was a strong candidate because of my technical background coupled with my ability to speak Afrikaans, which means I can understand elements of Dutch. After landing the role I moved across and began exploring the city, which I’ve really enjoyed.
What does your role involve?
I’m a Manager in the Debt and Capital Advisory team, which is part of Performance Improvement in Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory. Primarily, I work with financial sponsors, helping them secure financing to support their investments. My role is all about understanding their business needs, finding the most appropriate lenders and working out the best way to solve pain points when navigating these major transactions. I’ve always really enjoyed helping people to solve complex problems - that’s why I enjoy the role so much. The businesses I work with also have an impact on society, and I enjoy knowing that by helping them, I’m also contributing to the bigger picture.
"My role is to support the firm’s wider inclusion ambition and to drive forward our strategy on inclusion within Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory, which includes shaping the inclusion strategy and vision."
Nadine
Manager
When did you join Deloitte and what’s your role?
I joined Deloitte in November 2015 to be part of the Client Feedback team, but my role has evolved since then. My background is in client experience, but I moved into Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory four years ago, where I’m an Inclusion Lead. My role is to support the firm’s wider inclusion ambition and to drive forward our strategy on inclusion within Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory, which includes shaping the inclusion strategy and vision. I look at ways to be more inclusive across all aspects of business, from tackling unconscious bias and barriers in the recruitment process through to the way performance management reviews work and much more. One of the things I’ve been involved with is the development of the Black Action Plan, which was launched in 2020. As part of this we are working to increase the number of people of all grades, and especially senior people, from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds at Deloitte, to increase representation in leadership and to better reflect society.
"Wellbeing is an important part of life here at Deloitte, and we are able to work flexibly to support that."
Olly, Senior Manager
How did you get your role?
I was in the Army for eight years when I started looking for a change. I still enjoyed Army life, but I wanted a change for my family. Someone told me about the Deloitte Military Transition programme, which supports ex-military people and their spouses into civilian roles at Deloitte. I applied and was offered a role in Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory, as a Senior Consultant. I integrate the many geographies in the Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory business to work together, harmonising processes. I work with some really good partners and people around the world and have been able to build an amazing team from our Engagement Support Services in Cardiff.
What do you enjoy most about working at Deloitte?
I enjoy my role and the learning opportunities, but also the fact that we are a very people focused business. Wellbeing is an important part of life here at Deloitte, and we can work flexibly to support that. For me that means being able to move around my working hours so that I can volunteer at my son’s school and pick him up when I need to. For others it might mean something different. Everyone here respects individual needs, and I have never felt guilty asking for more flexibility when it’s needed. We communicate well to make sure that we can get the job done, while meeting all of our personal needs and responsibilities too.
