Director in Ethics and Regulatory Compliance
Read it, like it, share it...
I grew up in High Wycombe with my parents and siblings. I liked school when I was younger, especially playing football. At the age of 10 I was introduced to clay pigeon shooting by my dad and that was something we did together. I enjoyed tech, business studies and humanities subjects, but I decided university wasn’t the right route for me. Everyone else I knew was going, but I wanted to get straight into the working world and learn on the job. I joined Deloitte as a BrightStart apprentice after completing my A-Levels, initially working in IT audit, internal audit, risk management and advisory work. I got a lot of insight into lots of different companies and industries from a young age, which I relished. I then left the firm for a year to go and work for a large tech company, but I soon decided to rejoin Deloitte. I missed the variety of clients I'd worked with.
I’m a Director in Ethics and Regulatory Compliance. Our team supports companies with large digital platforms to effectively manage the new regulations they’re facing. It’s an unprecedented time in the technology industry, with many changes to laws and new rules being implemented by regulators. As well as helping our clients with changes to their business, we also help to ensure that these changes are embedded into the wider culture and way of doing things. I’ve always been really interested in technology, so having the opportunity to work with some of the world’s biggest tech companies is fascinating to me.
I’m currently working within a technology company’s compliance function, bringing in expertise across several different areas of regulation. Being totally immersed in the client’s environment is great, because you gain a more in-depth understanding of their corporate culture and focus areas. It’s a very relationship-based business and I enjoy having the opportunity to grow and develop these.
Since joining as a BrightStart I’ve worked my way up to director level and been hugely supported along the way. I’ve always had amazing mentors, as well as plenty of training opportunities. I’ve moved teams now, but I also had the chance to take the ACA qualification when I joined.

I start the week by interviewing some candidates for new roles. It’s a busy time and we’re growing the Digital Regulation team, which is exciting. | I’m working with a large technology company and head into their London office. We have a weekly team meeting where I provide an update on the work I’m leading to help complete a regulatory risk assessment. | I facilitate a working group to discuss the client’s plans for meeting sustainability regulations. After work I meet some friends to go for dinner. | I have a meeting with members of Deloitte’s Reputation, Risk, Crisis & Resilience team to discuss the ways we can help our clients in the tech space to be more resilient. | I meet with members of the Digital Regulation team across the firm to discuss some compliance work we’re collaborating on. In the evening I relax by going for a walk with my wife and then planning our next holiday adventure! |
On the weekends I enjoy exercising and meeting up with friends. Since the pandemic I’ve made a big effort to get healthier, and I’ve incorporated more walking into my routine. We often go out for a hike to enjoy a bit of nature. I also try to travel as much as possible, and I completed a Californian road trip last year, exploring national parks like Yosemite, Seqouia and the Grand Canyon. I finished it off by getting married in Las Vegas which was a unique experience!
Staying curious about what’s going on in the world and how it might impact your clients is vital. There’s lots of uncertainty in the geopolitical landscape at the moment so you need to be up-to-date and understand the potential implications for your work.
As you get more senior, you need to have a clear understanding of people’s different roles. You need the ability to connect the right people from across the firm to bring together the best possible team to serve a client.
I’ve been lucky to work with so many diverse clients and industries and you can learn from each experience. I really enjoy bringing that problem solving expertise to the next situation.

Land of the Giants
The Land of the Giants podcast devotes each season to a different big tech company, including Apple and Disney. They talk through the evolution of these companies, the massive challenges they’ve overcome and the impact of different leaders. It’s interesting, but it’s also helpful from a work perspective to get an understanding of how different places work. We can learn also from the history of these big players.
