Hi, I'm Alison.

Director Enabling Functions (and space educator!), Leeds

Read it, like it, share it...

My journey so far…

I was born in Newcastle but spent my early years in Lesotho in Africa, where my dad was a university lecturer. Known as ‘the Kingdom in the Sky’, Lesotho is surrounded by mountains and stars, and it’s where I developed a keen interest in space and astronomy. I still remember seeing Halley’s Comet and the moons of Jupiter for the first time.

We moved to Nottingham in the UK when I was eight. I enjoyed school and went to university in Sheffield to study geography, as I loved the natural world. After graduating I joined a firm called Arthur Andersen to work in HR. I chose HR because I really enjoyed working with people and I wanted to make a difference to people in their careers. I was also interested in the technical side, such as the systems and spreadsheets.

In 2002, Andersen was acquired by Deloitte, so I officially became part of the firm. I stayed in HR for seven years before moving into shared service design and implementation. I developed the processes that would help us introduce centralised shared services within HR, increasing the efficiency of the HR services on offer. I then moved into learning and became a learning leader in the UK and then the Global firm.

Work that matters

I’m now the Director of an internal function called Partner Matters, which helps to provide critical support for more than 1,300 UK partners. This includes processes such as their admission to partnership, performance management, retirement transition, and other types of advice and support. We also work in close collaboration with other teams that directly help the partners. I enjoy working with senior leadership because it offers me a real insight into the firm. I also like working with the fantastic people in my team.

I’ve had three children in the past 11 years, and the firm has accommodated me to work part-time, initially for three days a week and now four. I was able to participate in the director promotion process while on my third maternity leave, which meant I came back to a more senior role. I’ve really been supported to have a family and progress my career, and part-time working has helped me to achieve that. Last year I also took six weeks of unpaid parental leave over the summer to spend time with my children.

Outside of work, I’ve created a space education website called Inspirational Space and I run sessions to help local children to learn more about space and astronomy. It’s wonderful to see children’s faces light up when they look through a telescope for the first time.

Highlights from my week

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
I have a wellbeing meeting today. I offer advisory support, and discuss our support services. I have a team strategy day in the office with my team, reviewing where we are up to in delivering our strategy for the year. We focus on our development as a function, and the additional ways we can support partners. I co-deliver a session called ‘Leading Other Partners’ for partners who are new into leadership roles. The goal is to communicate the content that is most relevant for their new role as a leader of other partners in the firm. I work on a collaboration project where I link up with other partner-focused teams. We want to improve the overall partner experience in the business. In the evening, I have a family dinner before finishing some emails.  Friday is my non-working day for Deloitte, so I focus on my space project today, holding an education session for a school. Later I relax in front of the TV after a nice dinner.

My weekend looks like

At the weekends I enjoy going to woodlands and parks with my children and spending time together as a family. I also prepare educational materials for Inspirational Space or do some of my own research. It’s great to have a focus outside of my main job, and I appreciate the flexibility I have to do that alongside my career.

3 things I've learned

Parenting and a career can be combined

It’s definitely possible to have a family and succeed at work. I’ve been supported to do this at Deloitte for the past 11 years.

Change is inevitable

In the 25 years I’ve worked here, no two years have been the same. You have to be agile and go with the flow when things change and develop.

Always consult

If you’re struggling, there’s always someone at Deloitte you can talk it through with. You’re never alone, and people will help you to find the right solution.

Did you find this useful?

Thanks for your feedback

Alison's book recommendation

Origin Story: A Big History of Everything by David Christian

Origin Story traces the whole of history, from the Big Bang to dinosaurs to the present day. I recommend it to anyone wanting to understand the universe, the Earth, and our own existence. It tackles profound questions and speculates on what the future may bring, while giving you a renewed appreciation for just how precious our planet is.
