“What I love most is that every day is different and there’s so much to learn. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects in lots of different industries, and I get to ensure that the companies we audit are held accountable for the sustainability information they provide.”
Helen, Audit & Assurance
How did you get your role at Deloitte?
During university I did Deloitte’s Summer Vacation Scheme in Audit and Assurance, which was brilliant. I got the chance to work on a wide range of projects in lots of different sectors and learnt a lot about business. I returned after completing my degree to start the graduate programme in the Southampton office. While I loved the culture of the firm, I was keen to do more reporting in the environment, social and governance areas. At the time Deloitte didn’t have a team in place so I went to a cosmetics company, to work on sustainable projects. By the time I’d been there for two years, Deloitte had established its own Controls, Sustainability & Emerging Assurance team and I decided to go back. I wanted the opportunity to work for a big firm again, and to be working on a huge range of different projects.
What is your role?
I’m a director in the Controls, Sustainability & Emerging Assurance team. We check the sustainability and social data that companies are publicly sharing is an accurate reflection of business. For example, I’ll look at their carbon footprint, their diversity metrics, as well as things like gender gaps and board structure. What I love most is that every day is different and there’s so much to learn. I’ve had the opportunity to learn about high-profile companies and I get to ensure that these firms are held accountable.
"As someone who has struggled with undiagnosed neurodiversity, I like to support others who are having challenges. It's important to me that I can help people get the adjustments they need in the workplace."
James, Audit & Assurance
What does your role involve?
My role as a senior Audit Associate involves working for the Audit Delivery Centre in Newcastle, to perform checks on the audits we do. I look for anything that might be incorrect or missing, and flag any potential challenges to the wider team. It's really important that the audits we perform and the reports we produce are accurate and high quality. The information we are providing is helping to build trust between businesses and the general public, and I'm proud to be part of a team that will hold businesses to account.
What networks are you part of?
I was diagnosed with autism in 2021, and became involved with the Neurodiversity Network at Deloitte. I've discovered there are lots of really useful forms of support available. My neurodiversity has become more apparent as I have increased in seniority, but I know that I can always ask for help. One example of this is the software tool I use for recording conversations. It will create a transcript for me, so that I can go back over the conversation and look for any nuance I might have missed. I also get involved with webinars and speak at events to help raise awareness by sharing my own story.
"I love feeling like I have made a difference to the businesses we're working with, and having a positive impact in society in turn."
Amy, Audit & Assurance
What do you do?
I joined Deloitte to work in the Analytics and Modelling team for Audit and Assurance. The world of analytics is so broad, and you can do so much with it. One example is 'data visualisation', where we set out data in a way that's easy for businesses to see and understand, to help them make important decisions. Problem solving is also a big part of my role, as well as coding and design, which are actually very creative.
What do you most enjoy about your role?
There are so many different types of software you can learn and so much diversity in the role. I really enjoy that cycle of learning and using the learning for positive development and problem solving, to help companies. I love feeling like I have made a difference to the businesses we're working with, and having a positive impact in society in turn. I also enjoy other aspects of life at Deloitte, including my role as a volunteer mentor and my work to support events and activities for the East Asian community, which is part of the Multicultural Network. There's lots of things to get involved with here, whatever your interests are.
"The induction was especially helpful, as it allowed me time to settle in and gain some more knowledge of Deloitte's audit approach."
Bryn, Audit & Assurance
How did you get your job at Deloitte?
I went through a recruiter, who contacted me via LinkedIn. At the time I was working for a smaller firm and looking for the next step up. I was already keen to move jobs, and when the recruiter told me they had connections with Deloitte, it sounded like an exciting opportunity. They were able to guide me through the recruitment process, which was really helpful.
What inspired you to join from a smaller firm?
I wanted to challenge myself in Big 4 audit. Working in a smaller firm really helps you to develop core skills and you get good opportunities for training, as well as full exposure to the file and testing of financial statements. However, I didn't have any experience working with FTSE listed companies, which I felt was important to progress to the next stage of my career. I'm really glad I made the move, it's been a very positive experience. The induction was especially helpful, as it allowed me time to settle in and gain some more knowledge of Deloitte's audit approach. You also get assigned a buddy, who can help answer any questions you have. At the same time the engagement teams and people I've worked with are all extremely supportive.
"Joining from a smaller firm has been a real boost for my career and I'm excited about what the next steps will bring."
Christopher, Audit & Assurance
How did you get your job at Deloitte?
Before joining, I was working at a smaller firm. I wasn't actively looking for new roles, but when I was contacted by a recruiter I thought the opportunity at Deloitte seemed really exciting. I wanted to gain new experience working with larger companies and global operations, as well as obtaining more exposure to International Financial Reporting and Auditing standards. The idea of being part of a larger engagement team, with opportunities to manage people, also really appealed to me.
What was positive about the transition from a smaller firm?
For me the step up in size was exactly what I was looking for, and I'm very grateful to have been given the opportunity. I've also had the chance to meet lots of new people which I've really enjoyed, as Deloitte has expertise in pretty much all business areas you can think of. Joining from a smaller firm has been a real boost for my career and I'm excited about what the next steps will bring. In future I'd like to do international secondment opportunities, as well as continuing my learning and development.
"Not only do managers help clients through insights and recommendations, there is also a strong commitment to people, diversity of thought and individual wellbeing."
Temwani, Audit & Assurance
What attracted you to Deloitte and what surprised you about working here?
I moved to Deloitte from another Big Four firm in October 2019, because of Deloitte's focus on diversity and wellbeing. I really liked the initiatives around culture, values and inclusion, which make everyone at the firm feel valued. For me the role of audit has always been about getting the job done, which has meant neglecting both my physical and mental wellbeing in the past. Working for Deloitte is completely different. Not only do managers help clients through insights and recommendations, there is also a strong commitment to people, diversity of thought and individual wellbeing.
How do you explain your job to friends and family?
In the simplest terms, my jobs is to audit the financial statements of entities to provide assurance that they are accurate, reliable and free from significant errors. The role allows me to see how different businesses operate and to gain an understanding of different industries. I love being able to build great relationships with the teams I work with, as well as the opportunities to gain knowledge from other like-minded people at Deloitte.
Tell us about your role.
I work on the audits of securitisation firms. This is a financial product where assets are pooled and sold to a third party, which can then generate interest on those assets. I audit smaller companies, which gives me lots of opportunities to understand the ways different businesses operate.
Are you involved in any activities outside your main role?
I’ve always been interested in sustainability investment, so I’ve sought out opportunities to get involved in our climate change work. I’m now a volunteer for the WorldClimate team, where we look at initiatives and tools that can help both Deloitte and the companies we audit to reduce carbon footprints. I feed back information my team too, and enjoy being able to support our sustainability goals.
When I was growing up, we didn’t learn about climate change in the way we do now, but I was always aware of my surroundings. Coming from a developing country, we were taught about water usage, and that it was a precious commodity. Being a part of positive change is important to me, both personally and professionally.
“I’m an expert in greenhouse gas accounting, so I help our assurance teams check company carbon emissions data. I also do a lot of training and education on sustainability.”
Morgan, Audit & Assurance
Why did you join Deloitte and what do you do?
I joined Deloitte three years ago, after reading an interesting article about the ways accountants were solving the climate crisis. I’m now a director in the sustainability assurance team, working with qualified auditors and subject matter experts to ensure that businesses are accurately reporting their sustainability data. I’m an expert in greenhouse gas accounting, so I always help the team interpret the correct protocols. I also do a lot of training and education on sustainability.
What do you enjoy in your spare time?
I’ve got a three-year-old daughter, so I enjoy spending time with her. We go swimming every weekend and I take her to football. I also love fishing, so when I’m not with my family my happiest place is standing in a river listening to the water around me. I find going out to beautiful places off-the beaten track is a great way to clear my head. I’ve been lucky enough to see kingfishers, as well as otters and squirrels swimming across the river.
The pressures of the pandemic have underlined the need for robust and transparent company reporting. In 2021 the government released a white paper with major recommendations from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Brydon, and Kingman reviews. Not only has Deloitte supported the majority of proposals shared, we see it as an opportunity to further enhance the quality of our audit processes. Discover how we’re doing this.
Our independent audits help to build trust and confidence, equipping the companies we audit and by combining the latest audit tools, technologies and procedures to deliver high quality audits, we’re able to deliver work we are truly proud of. At Deloitte, you’ll have the opportunity to audit some of the most influential multinationals, innovative start-ups and biggest household names across the globe. If you join our Audit team, you’ll gain insight into how these organisations operate and get to the heart of the issues that matter to them.
External Audit
As the world changes, businesses must be ready to respond to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. In External Audit, we ensure that businesses operate as they should, building public confidence and trust. We believe our people are at their best when they connect their work to a greater cause. Our External Audit teams help to drive effective financial and wider corporate reporting, which is critical for financial stability.
Our External Audit business has two core areas:
IT, Data & Analytics
Our Technology and Data Audit teams have deep technology specialism and support external audit engagements, as well as broader Assurance business activities. They work across all parts of the audit business to support our audit teams to understand technology, assess the risk around IT systems that generate financially relevant information, test controls relating to technology and data as well as developing and running data analytics and other technology solutions.
Businesses need to be resilient and transparent in their reporting to build trust and confidence. Assurance practitioners play a key role in achieving this through independent review and challenge of management’s views on a range of regulatory and reporting requirements, whether financial, operational or compliance in nature.
Accounting & Reporting Assurance Services
Our Accounting and Reporting services leverage our audit skillset and/ or subject matter expertise to provide assurance on corporate reporting and accounting conclusions. We help companies understand and apply accounting standards, adding value in areas like IPOs and M&A. We deliver public interest assurance under Standards for Investment Reporting to companies transacting on capital markets and also deliver valuable review and challenge of risk and control environments, particularly to those companies transitioning from private to public ownership. We also provide assurance on regulatory reporting, including translating data into compliant disclosures, and offer independent diligence reports for securitisation transactions.
Controls, Sustainability & Emerging Assurance
Controls, Sustainability and Emerging Assurance, brings together existing assurance offerings in topics such as ESG, SOX, finance transformation and service auditor reporting; along evolving areas such as AI and Algo.
We provide quality standards-based assurance and independent challenge on sustainability metrics and disclosures, helping to ensure accurate and trustworthy ESG reporting. We help to ensure transparent reporting on data use, and maintain stakeholder trust by helping companies navigate data risk and compliance challenges presented by the rise in AI and algorithms. We provide assurance to those charged with governance to fulfil responsibilities in relation to the design and operating effectiveness of the controls and safeguards in place over business processes in response to evolving regulations and expectations on corporate governance. We provide independent service auditor reporting over controls that support the production of financial information, as well as non-financial assurance in support of compliance with legislation from government.
