We manage our clients’ most complex operational challenges when they don’t have the expertise, infrastructure or people to manage it themselves. Our clients are generally characterised as organisations who have a crisis, reputational, regulatory or business processing issue, and we operate globally. You’ll grow your knowledge and expertise across multiple sectors, working with pioneering architecture and cutting-edge technology such as robotic and cognitive automation. The sheer diversity of roles here means you can create your own individual career path. Whether you choose to run large-scale operations, work in operations or become a solution architect, we’ll support you all the way.

The regulatory landscape for the financial services industry has never been more complex. Our industry leading Financial Risk teams are here to support institutions with some of their most challenging business issues. You’ll work with and learn from experts across Deloitte’s global network, supporting senior clients to achieve the right balance between meeting regulatory requirements and running a commercially successful business. Financial Risk is split into four teams: Traded & Quantitative Risk; Treasury, Liquidity & Capital Management; Structural Efficiency and Credit Risk Measurement. No prior knowledge on these topics is needed and you’ll get the support and training you need on the job.

We specialise in innovative advice and solutions, offering clients services that help them manage regulatory compliance, corporate governance and operational risk as well as helping them improve firm-wide culture. Deloitte has built a market leading team that supports top tier financial institutions in managing and implementing change, driven by new regulatory and strategic risk management objectives. You will support top tier financial institutions, from retail banks to insurers, as well as asset managers and investment banks.

We specialise in helping organisations to establish frameworks, capabilities, processes and technologies to manage evolving risk areas such as Environmental & Social Governance, Content Moderation, Anti Bribery & Corruption, Ethics and Human Rights.

We have lots of roles available within different business areas at Deloitte, with different opening and closing dates for applications, depending on the programmes and locations. However, we do close applications early when we get a very high volume of submissions, so we recommend applying as early as possible.

Mitigating the risks of machine learning

A leading UK retail bank was looking to implement machine learning technology across the business, as part of their broader digital transformation. Our job was to conduct a review of their newly designed Machine Learning Risk and Control Framework, and make clear, prioritised recommendations, so they could better manage the risks associated with adopting this innovative technology.

Everyone here is encouraged to create and collaborate every day. We even have a dedicated Innovation Team within Risk Advisory. Who are there to help colleagues progress their ideas through the innovation process, from developing a business case, to pitching for funding, to production.

We’re responsible for many of the firm’s most successful innovations. Just one example is BEAT (Behavioural Emotion and Analytics Tool). This voice and behavioural analysis engine tracks the emotion and language used in human speech. BEAT can analyse the spoken word far faster than any human can, and is able to score interactions based on pre-determined criteria. It can look for psychologically-defined characteristics and track key words or phrases. BEATs uses are broad and include call centre automation, insurance claim fraud detection, compliance analysis, and trading market abuse detection.

What’s the best thing about the programme you joined?

I joined Deloitte on the Graduate Programme in Risk Advisory in 2022. I’ve really enjoyed meeting so many people from different backgrounds, all of whom bring their own skillset, ways of thinking and industry knowledge. Every day at Deloitte is a learning experience, working alongside so much talent. Eventually, when you complete tasks or reach a level of expertise in an area that you want to specialise in, it is expected that you are the person to go to with certain questions, and you can continue this amazing cycle of knowledge exchange. It’s a positive process that keeps you motivated.

How have you been supported at Deloitte?

Beginning full-time work straight after university can feel sudden, as you are aware that considerable personal transformations lie ahead. However, I could not think of a better place to adjust than Deloitte. There are many facilities for continuous learning and development. Deloitte also fosters a positive culture through its ‘buddy’ and people lead systems, which enable you to have regular check-ins on your wellbeing and feel comfortable within your role. I am very grateful to be in such an open-minded firm, where I can widen my scope of learning and not restrict myself.

What advice would you give to other applicants?

The application process, whilst daunting at times, was enjoyable overall. All of the people that I engaged with throughout the process were very accommodating. In terms of advice, I would strongly recommend that candidates read up as much as they can on the team they are looking to join, as well as Deloitte as an organisation. This preparatory work can help you decide where you feel you fit in best at Deloitte and can go a long way to demonstrate your desire to join the firm.

Tell us about your progression at Deloitte

Working in Risk Advisory at Deloitte, I have largely learnt through doing. There is no substitute for project work when it comes to developing your knowledge and skills in a certain area. Alongside practical experience, I have been able to develop my expertise by asking my colleagues lots of questions. There’s a strong focus on learning here, and we have great access to various training platforms to develop the skills that we personally want to focus on.

How do you explain your job to friends and family?

I tell them I work in accountancy and help to improve finance functions. The work from project to project is very different and refreshing, and you can really have a chance to experience a lot before you decide to take a specific route. There are so many opportunities working for Deloitte and I was in awe of everything when I joined. From the offices to the people you meet and the clients you work with, it all really adds to the experience.

Do you feel Deloitte supports an inclusive environment?

One of the best things about Deloitte is the inclusive culture. No matter what walk of life you are from, Deloitte will give you the platform to be able to excel in anything. I am part of the Deloitte Muslim Network, which means I can connect with so many others who have been on a similar journey to myself, and ask them for advice and how to approach different situations in the workplace.
