Our response to this year’s extreme weather events

At the start of 2023, New Zealand faced two extreme weather events – a severe flood event in Auckland, quickly followed by Cyclone Gabrielle. These were devastating for many families and communities across Auckland and the East Coast, and the disruption they caused continues.

Our first priority was to ensure our people and their families in affected areas were safe. We contacted our community connections, particularly our Grow School partners, to offer help. We also identified the front-line organisations supporting those in need and shared this information with our people to help them understand how best to support their communities.

Our people logged 252 volunteer hours for two organisations in particular: The Fono and Catalytic Foundation. The Fono, a health services leader in the Pasifika community, quickly responded to the needs of hard-to-reach communities across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Thirty-two of our people contributed significantly, helping with assembling and delivering hundreds of emergency care and food boxes. Our volunteers with Catalytic Foundation packed 100 backpacks with essential resources for school children affected by the floods.

Meanwhile, on the East Coast and post-Cyclone Gabrielle, some of our team jumped in to respond with the blessing of the local civil defence team. Rotorua-based partners Lee Gray, Tamarapa Lloyd and Alex Wilson and their colleagues helped gather donations from local organisations to aid Wairoa – a remote town in the north of Hawke’s Bay.

Both Deloitte Global and Deloitte AP made significant donations to various Mayoral Disaster Relief funds across impacted districts, including to the Tairāwhiti Civil Defence fund, Hawke's Bay Civil Defence fund, and Tātau Tātau o Te Wairoa Trust (in partnership with Wairoa District Council).

Our firm value of manaaki (taking care of each other) shone through in how our professionals and our firm responded at a time of great community need.

Titiro atu ki ngā taumata ō te moana.
Look beyond the horizon to the future.

We at Deloitte work towards making an impact that matters. Outcomes that are good for Māori are good for our regions and our country. Our mahi is to support a better New Zealand in an inclusive and equitable way.

Our cultural competency journey

The uniqueness of Aotearoa New Zealand is recognised in our founding document Te Tiriti o Waitangi. As a professional services firm Deloitte acknowledges Te Tiriti and enhancing equity for Māori as tangata whenua. Through ongoing discovery and development, we strive to embed Te Tiriti principles into everything we do, from client and community engagement to fostering the capabilities of our people.

Hourua Pae Rau is Deloitte’s Māori services team. The name translates to ‘a double-hulled waka of a hundred horizons’, a metaphor describing how we partner with our clients to navigate an ocean of choice and arrive at the right destination.

Our team is dedicated to partnering with Māori, government, and businesses. We support Māori businesses to grow and positively impact our communities, and we help our clients fulfil their Treaty partner obligations. We also co-design and implement transformative strategies that help organisations remain agile and responsive to Māori.

By taking a Te Ao Māori approach to our mahi, we improve outcomes for Māori. To do this authentically, we enable our people to raise their level of cultural competency through internal training sessions on te reo Māori and tikanga Māori customary practices. Nearly 900 people across our firm have completed courses in te reo Māori or Tikanga in the workplace. Our Kaihautū (leaders in our waka) host events that support our people’s learning, like Matariki 101 and pepeha workshops, raranga classes (traditional flax weaving) and share hangī across our offices during Matariki.

This year, Dr Jacqui Matthews joined the firm as National Cultural Lead and became part of our Hourua Pae Rau and People and Performance teams. This newly appointed role directly supports our people who identify as Māori. It acknowledges what we need to do to serve our Māori clients and communities more effectively, and it keeps the importance of embedding Te Tiriti principles front of mind for our management group and Board.

Advancing on our cultural competency journey enables us to grow and make Deloitte New Zealand an authentically Aotearoa business.

Technological transformation at Techweek 2023

Digital change is relentless. The volume and complexity of new technologies means something new can quickly go from ground-breaking to broken. But at Deloitte, we see these challenges as opportunities.

In May 2023, we were the partner sponsor for Techweek. This annual festival celebrates digital innovation in New Zealand. It’s a platform for people to meet, share ideas and create new connections.

At Techweek, our people shared their insights on emerging trends and hotly debated topics, from the intersection of climate change and sustainable technology to nurturing talent and advancing the Māori technology sector.

Our Deloitte Global Chief Futurist, Mike Bechtel presented the Deloitte Tech Trends 2023 report, speaking to the impact of emerging technology opportunities and approaches that will soon become the new normal. Mike discussed where these trends are heading – and what could happen in the coming decade.

Many of our clients are embarking on significant digital transformations. It’s an exciting, rapidly evolving space that we’re proud to assist our clients with. Our involvement in Techweek enabled us to showcase our thought leadership in this space and the services Deloitte Digital teams offer.

Our Sustainability & Climate Services

While New Zealand has made good progress on a range of environmental, social and economic indicators, we believe that our future relies on New Zealand government and businesses making a step change in how they think about and conduct their operations.

The biggest impact Deloitte can make as a firm is through supporting our clients in their transition to a low-carbon economy, with people and nature at the centre of this transition. The opportunity to enhance outcomes for our economy, people and the environment is immense. Deloitte has extensive expertise in this space and our people have been delivering climate services for over 10 years. Our Sustainability & Climate Services team offers greenhouse gas measurement, reporting and auditing, operating model and ESG assessments, strategy and planning advise with a view to driving practical outcomes for our clients.

Accelerate2zero is one of the ways we empower organisations to reach net zero and comply with the Climate-related Financial Disclosure mandate, and the Carbon Neutral Government Programme. Accelerate2zero is a reporting and planning solution designed to facilitate the development of a dynamic emissions reduction strategy.

The path to net zero is complex. Innovation and technology must play a key role. As a firm, we are focused on supporting our clients through their transformation journey. By viewing their business through a stakeholder lens, we support them in designing and delivering the changes that will not only shield them from carbon price exposure, but keep them resilient, fit for purpose, and able to explore the possibilities of a low-carbon economy.

Deloitte’s Impact Accelerator – Supporting Social Enterprise

Deloitte’s Impact Accelerator programme seeks to support the growth of purpose-led, “not for loss” ventures in Aotearoa. Through pro bono services, we help them address an impact related business need or challenge, with a view to accelerating their impact and overall maturity. The recent work led by our Sustainability and Climate team for Critical Design is a great example of how the Impact Accelerator helps small businesses make a positive impact.

Critical Design is a Māori-led start-up with an innovative solution for hard-to-recycle plastics. Critical Cleanstone is a 100% recycled material used for building panels and furniture. Critical not only creates job opportunities, upskilling and training for local communities; it plays a significant role in preventing plastic production and waste by recycling plastic waste into commercially viable, recyclable products.

Deloitte undertook a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) for Critical, with the aim of unlocking the Green Building market. The circular, low emissions nature of Critical products provides a strong market differentiator and a highly sustainable solution. Critical wanted us to establish an LCA to test each component in their products’ life cycle and calculate their embodied carbon. Now having a robust methodology behind its emissions numbers, Critical can confidently go to market and offer a certifiable low-emissions, 100% circular product to support commercial property developers to achieve elements of their green building rating.

Rikki Stancich, a director in our Sustainability & Climate team says, ‘’Through LCA, not only do we determine a product’s emissions content, we can also identify hot spots along the product’s life cycle and spotlight opportunities to further reduce emissions.’’

We also ensured that the methodology applied would meet the relevant product certification and green building schemes to ensure Critical could unlock maximum Green Building market share and achieve their mission.

Leadership at the heart of health

Our people work with the health sector to develop a system focused on the health and wellbeing of patients and their whānau. We leverage our experienced thought leaders and diverse team to do this successfully and combine our international expertise with local capability.

In September 2022, we welcomed the team from Francis Health into our Consulting Health Practice. Our new team members are experienced practitioners with backgrounds in central government, hospitals and primary care organisations in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. Together, we’re passionate about making a difference in New Zealand’s health and social care sectors. The team provides a full range of services to private and public healthcare clients, including advice on equity, performance and strategy, health system operations and organisational development.

Since expanding the team in 2022, we’ve also offered the Change Collaborative: specialist leadership and management skills development programmes, aiming to help health professionals successfully and confidently lead their teams through challenges and changes. The programmes encompass personal and leadership skills development, building change platforms and how to make meaningful improvements within the health system. The Change Collaborative already has more than 600 alumni across New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.

As our Health Practice continues to grow, so does our leadership team, with Stuart Francis, Rory Matthews and Naila Naseem joining us as partners, and Tuhakia Keepa joining as Director Hauora Māori and Equity.

Deloitte New Zealand State of the State report

Our annual State of the State report examines the role of the state in addressing some of the most significant issues faced by Aotearoa today. It brings experts and leaders together to explore the strategic capabilities required of New Zealand as a nation to improve outcomes for all.

Our sixth report, titled “Into the wind: Capabilities for navigating uncertainty,” focusses on six global megatrends which have the potential to challenge our state’s ability to manage change. Geopolitical tensions, climate change, persistent inequality, polarised perspectives, an ageing population and accelerating technology create a high-stakes, high-uncertainty landscape before us.

The report highlights the need to take bolder approaches, shorten decision and implementation cycles and leverage new technologies. We must also engage diverse voices and use meaningful partnership models across government, communities and business. Understanding and delivering on Te Tiriti obligations will remain paramount.

Since its publication, the State of the State 2023 has helped us have rich discussions with public sector Chief Executives, private sector Board of Directors and at external conferences and events.

Deloitte Partner Adithi Pandit says, “The challenges that lay before us as a nation, a government and a people are uncharted and uncertain. But the steps we take now to prepare ourselves for the journey ahead will resonate through the generations. We hope this sparks debate, reflection and challenge as we lean into the winds of change.”
