From equity in education and health, to equity and inclusion at work, to meeting urgent needs related to humanitarian crises, we actively engage in addressing and creating solutions to the most pressing challenges facing society. These challenges are deeply human, impact billions of people, and require long-term, transformative system solutions. They cannot be solved by any single individual or organization. Deloitte’s approach is to help lead the way and inspire powerful collaborations that enable our people to work with clients and community organizations on shared solutions.
Over the past year, we have invested our know-how and resources, and our people have invested their time through pro bono work and volunteering, to tackle systemic problems in communities around the world. To further scale and accelerate these efforts, Deloitte has made a worldwide commitment to invest more than US$3 billion over the next 10 years in societal impact initiatives. We are committed to investing in education and skills development, climate action, humanitarian responses, and the most pressing needs in our local communities. We are also focused on supporting and developing our 457,000 people around the world, including addressing these challenges within our organization. Deloitte continues to provide career opportunities, resources, and an inclusive culture to help our people thrive.
During FY2023, our Cayman Islands office celebrated the 5th anniversary of IMPACT Week. Each day, we hosted a different initiative for a different beneficiary.
These included environmental causes as well as societal impact projects, such as a blood donation drive in collaboration with the Cayman Islands Blood Bank, a clothing donation drive for the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, a book donation drive for Literacy is for Everyone ‘LIFE’ (which also benefitted the Cayman Islands Humane Society). Our people and partners raised also over US$7,000 in support of our signature WorldClass program Thrive By Five, to further our commitment to support early childhood literacy.
Two years ago, Deloitte Trinidad launched our Future Build Program amidst a global pandemic, as we sought ways to continue to make a positive impact despite the physical restrictions. This program forms part of our commitment to WorldClass, Deloitte’s global ambition to impact 100 million people by 2030. The aim of the program is to empower students through career development and life skills and is conducted by our professionals via the Zoom platform.
Between November 2022 to April 2023, we delivered workshops to students of the College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT) and the University of the West Indies, across various topics, such as Technology & Cyber, Networking and Community Outreach and Career Journeys. In FY2023, our professionals also engaged with secondary students to deliver six workshops to three schools; East Mucurapo Secondary School, Woodbrook Secondary School and Queen’s Royal College.
The topics included: Communication Skills and Navigating Technology; Ethics & Work Ethics; Goal Setting and Education; Responsibility & Accountability; Resume Building and Interview Preparation, and School Learning and Workplace Skills.
Through our local WorldClass commitment to make an impact that matters, we are applying our core skills and experience to empower students to develop direct programs and collaborations, that help secondary and tertiary students to build important life skills that instill a professional work ethic and help them to aim for a career that aligns with their values, interests and skills.
Team Deloitte joined over 1,600 walkers in March 2023 to support the BreastCancer Foundation “BCF.” With glow sticks and steady steps, we turned Seven Mile Beach pink to help raise awareness and funds for the non-profit’s Wellness Program, which focuses on supporting breast cancer patients and their families in Cayman.
Our team in the British Virgin Islands supported the Ministry of Education’s Adopt-a-School Programme, aimed at generating financial and technical support from the private sector toward maintaining the quality of public education and educational infrastructure. We were pleased to make a financial donation that would have assisted with infrastructural improvements at the Willard Wheatley Primary School.
Deloitte Trinidad believes that it is critical to provide students with the necessary tools and resources to find meaningful work in the new world economy. Deloitte Trinidad’s professionals apply their skills and experience to contribute to this ambition every year.
UWI World Work Recruitment Fair
As part of this commitment, our professionals paused their busy schedules in March and April 2023, to volunteer and contribute at the annual World of Work (WoW) Recruitment Fair hosted by the University of the West Indies. Our people were on the ground, applying their skills and experience to guide young, upcoming professionals to map out their career paths and position themselves for success.
USC’s Career and Business Week
For the first time, we also participated in the University of the Southern Caribbean’s (USC) Career and Business Week in FY2023, connecting with approximately 40 students on the Importance of Financial Literacy. Students were offered insights into budgeting, financial planning and finding a competitive edge through professional designations.
Throughout FY2023, our team at Deloitte Bahamas was engaged in seminars and career fairs, equipping approximately 1450 individuals with invaluable information to assist in their career planning and readiness for the modern workplace. Through our partnerships with The University of the Bahamas, Queen’s College, St. Augustine College High School, C.V. Bethel High School, the Department of Labour, and the Bahamas Society for Human Resource Management, our people were eager to volunteer their time and impart knowledge to persons interested in cultivating impactful careers and exploring opportunities in the job market.
Deloitte Bahamas' aim of making an impact that matters calls on us to be engaged in initiatives that improve the lives of the most vulnerable groups within the communities in which our firm operates and our people live.
It was our honor to assist in advancing the objectives of The Dignified Girl Project, an NGO dedicated to ensuring that every child and adolescent female not only has access to essential hygiene products and education but is also empowered to make informed decisions regarding their social, psychological, biological, and economic wellbeing.
Our team was pleased to donate essential hygiene products that would have improved the everyday lives of 100 girls.
Throughout FY2023, Deloitte Cayman Islands was consistent in its contribution to the CBC’s regional WorldClass goal of impacting 85,000 lives by 2030. To this end, this office supported the local Caymanian community by leveraging the expertise of its people, as well as its financial resources, totaling over US$56K, toward supporting initiatives and NGOs aligned with improving youth and adult education, skills development, entrepreneurship, and employability. We contributed to initiatives such as the Big Brothers and Sisters of Cayman 5K Walk/Run, initiatives hosted by the 100 Women in Finance Association, Help for Children, and the Special Olympics Cayman Islands. Our office was also a platinum sponsor of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority’s Charity 5K Walk/Run aimed at advancing literacy in Caymanian primary schools.
Scholarship and Work Placement Initiatives
We were pleased to assist in advancing the tertiary educational and career pursuits and nurture the potential of talented Caymanian students who may come from underserved segments of the community. Through our annual Scholarship Program, we provided financial support and professional development to three students. In our Work Placement Program, we also impacted ten students from local public and private schools with hands-on experience during the school year.
Literacy Is For Everyone (LIFE)
As part of its WorldClass outreach and engagement, our Cayman Islands office continued its record of longstanding support for LIFE Ltd., a charitable organization dedicated to significantly increasing child and adult literacy levels across the Cayman Islands through a range of programs and initiatives. Through LIFE’s Thrive by Five program, aimed at giving 0-5-year-old children from underserved preschools in Cayman a solid foundation in literacy, our people volunteered time during the workweek to read to the children enrolled in the program. We impacted 286 children and supported the efforts of the 50 teachers instrumental in their development.
Deloitte Cayman Islands also supported LIFE’s overall schedule of programs through our annual financial sponsorship.
"I’m honored to have had the opportunity to play a part in the growth and
intellectual development of these children over the years, as well as support
the work of the dedicated teachers and caretakers at the school" - Carly Dignam, Financial Advisory Senior Manager and LIFE program volunteer
For the fifth consecutive year, Deloitte Bermuda was proud to participate as a Platinum Sponsor of the Bermuda End-to-End. This event is a pillar of Bermuda’s charitable sector, and sees over 2,000 participants set foot to Bermuda’s roads to raise money for a select number of non-profits. Deloitte, again, welcomed walkers, runners, cyclers, and more at the Somerset Bridge water stop. For the third year in a row, Deloitte was voted “best water stop” by participants.
“It’s a privilege to be a part of this incredible initiative that, for so many years,
has continued to make an impact on Bermuda’s charitable sector and the
communities that they benefit. We’re thrilled to have won the People’s Choice
Award for best water stop. We love providing participants with a well-deserved
break. This award is the cherry on top of another fantastic year with the
End-to-End.” – Leah Amaral, Marketing Manager
The Non-Profit Alliance of Bermuda is committed to strengthening and
unifying Bermudian nonprofits through education. In FY2023, as part of our Impact EveryDay activities, we continued our partnership with the Non-Profit Alliance to provide a multi-day training session for its clients. Through this initiative, our people volunteered their time and leveraged their expertise to deliver training sessions to 54 persons from non-profit entities. We were delighted to enhance their understanding of topics critical to the sustainability of their organizations, such as budgeting, best practices in recruitment, interpreting financial statements, and developing risk management plans.
Deloitte Bermuda was thrilled to continue partnering with the Family
Centre, an NGO dedicated, for over 30 years, to improving the lives of families across the island by providing accessible and free mental health counselling services for children, teens, and their families, as well as engaging in outreach and advocacy initiatives. Our firm contributed to the Family Centre’s Adopt a Family initiative for the fourth consecutive year. With the help of a US$25,000 donation, thirteen Family Centre families received an all-inclusive holiday cheer experience. The funds were used to purchase gifts, including Christmas stockings for each family member, electricity and grocery vouchers, as well as holiday meals for each family. Deloitte volunteers were placed into teams and assigned to the families. On their own time, our volunteers purchased and wrapped gifts for the children and parents in their designated families.
For the fourth consecutive year, the team at Deloitte Trinidad has come together to donate their time and resources to spread cheer to families in need across the country during the holiday season. This annual event has become a year-end tradition, with coordination beginning around mid-October and running throughout the season until a week or two before
Christmas.
With a combination of vouchers from select vendors (grocery, personal care and pharmaceutical), as well as monetary contributions, our team continues to make a positive impact in our local communities – especially during this festive season. Efforts and results were doubled during our FY2023 Holiday Hamper Drive, which resulted in increased support for ten families, including senior citizens, single parents and the differently abled. Our objective for this year’s event is to not only meet – but potentially surpass – last year’s amount to make an even greater and more meaningful impact by increasing the value of the contributions or expanding the pool of recipients.
During FY2023, for our traditional Holiday Drive, our people fundraised to benefit families served by the Department of Children and Family Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Meals on Wheels. Together, through a variety of initiatives around the office including a World Cup challenge, we raised over US$17,000 which allowed us to provide gifts, meals and hampers for almost 130 children, families and seniors in our community.
At Deloitte Trinidad, pro bono opportunities provide our people with the occasion to tap into their expertise to lend a helping hand to non-profits and other organizations. Over the years, it has been an excellent way for us to dedicate ourselves to what we are passionate about and excel at and be able to equip others to make an impact in the wider world. Our aim is to assist start-ups, social enterprises and local organizations to build their financial and business models, as well as support them through mentoring, business consulting, and other skills-based workshops.
Business Chemistry workshop
In FY2023, we were able to share with 22 professionals of our Ministry of Education, Student Support Services Division (SSSD) , on different working styles to help with their team building efforts. Our consulting professionals leveraged Deloitte’s Business Chemistry framework to help this team of leaders and seniors in their aim to build stronger relationships within the team and to understand the value each person brings to the unit. The SSSD delivers an array of psycho-social, educational and behavioral services for students across our nation, including career guidance and specialized services for children with moderate and severe Special Educational needs, behavioral issues and clinical issues.
Animals 360 Foundation Incorporated
We always encourage and support our professionals to volunteer in areas where their passions lie. Locally, Animals 360 Foundation Incorporated has been making excellent strides to help improve animal welfare through promoting humane animal care and responsible animal ownership, and supporting the healthy, happy lifestyles of animals. Over the past nine (9) years, our Risk Advisory and CR&S Partner, Derek Mohammed and Finance Senior, Salma Hosein, who both have a passion for helping animals, have consistently dedicated their time and efforts to helping this non-profit in any way they can. With the substantial increase in the number of pets being abandoned because pet owners cannot afford to keep and feed them, Animals 360 has been instrumental in making spaying and neutering more affordable to low-income households. This helps to decrease overpopulation which sustainably benefits pets and the planet. Approximately 1000 animals are spayed and neutered annually through the program. To support the foundation with their nationwide efforts, Derek lends his leadership and guidance to their initiatives, and Salma ensures they are compliant with the necessary statutory requirements and reporting.
