Ambition
To meet urgent staffing demands, a social media giant enlisted Deloitte’s help to add 20 engineers per month with specific recruiting requirements—including regional considerations and skill sets. To help solve, the Deloitte and client teams worked together closely throughout the process.

Action
Deloitte was involved across three dimensions—recruiting, onboarding and performance management—and used innovative delivery methods to help the company achieve engineering success. This work included:

• Collaborations with up to seven recruiting process outsourcers to maintain the required recruiting pace
• An “academy” program for new recruits to join immediately for a four- to six-week trial period, followed by a final decision on permanent hire

With the help of Deloitte, the organization reduced its lead time to first PR from four weeks to one day by creating self-service access to full-stack software starter kits and data science environments. The work included:

• Designing the solution architecture for an internal developer platform, which included the interaction, orchestration, and automation layers.

In addition, the workstation experience for developers was very degraded and unable to support modern engineering practices.

• Defining future-state journey maps for prioritized developer personas—Java developers, front end engineers, mobile developers, and test automation engineers.
• Designing an MVP view of a DevX capability map and a future-state environment view to enable a frictionless flow of activities.

• Defining a clear approach on how to measure developer productivity and satisfaction.

Achievement
Deloitte helped the client establish a clear DevEx strategy and roadmap with key stakeholders aligned in application development, enterprise architecture, security, and infrastructure. The project also enabled the launch of a pilot program implementing environments 2.0 to reduce cycle times for environment access and testing activities, enabled by modern DevOps capabilities.
