Pave your way to success through mentorship

Anthony Howard shares the impact of mentorship on his personal and professional journey

Raised by a single mother, Anthony Howard and his brother joined the local Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) chapter as teenagers. Through BBBS, Anthony's mentor, or "Big," imparted crucial life skills and played a pivotal role in his career path.

While exploring a career at Deloitte, Anthony realized Deloitte’s impact beyond accounting through insights shared by his Big and Deloitte recruiters.
“When Deloitte recruiters were on campus, I learned that Deloitte was much more than an accounting organization and that they also had a consulting business. My Big was a consultant and did what I felt was meaningful work. Had it not been for my Big, I would not have had the visibility into what became my current career path, how I could potentially make an impact from a business perspective and continue to grow personally.”

Mentoring left such a profound impact on Anthony that he became a Big himself at 18. Today, Anthony is one of the youngest members on the Miami BBBS board of directors, and his Deloitte career spans more than a decade. He is currently a manager in Risk & Financial Advisory, Deloitte & Touche LLP.

Anthony's story stands as a testament to the transformative power of mentoring, shaping not just individuals but also the future of the workforce. He currently mentors several Deloitte professionals and shares his insights below.

3 things to consider as a mentor:

  1. Be patient with your mentee. Mentorship is a learning and development process for all.
  2. Be an active listener. Understand what your mentee is saying to you so you can help provide appropriate guidance.
  3. Put yourself in your mentee’s shoes. We’ve all had different experiences and hardships, and you should consider this when you’re giving advice.

3 things to consider as a mentee:

  1. Take advantage of the moment. Come prepared with questions for your mentor to receive knowledge that can help you in various aspects of your life.
  2. Take action. Mentorship goes beyond asking for and receiving advice–you should consider that advice.
  3. Give back. If you’ve been fortunate to have a good mentor, consider providing the same type of support to someone else.
