Whether you're interviewing from the comfort of your home or a remote location, it's important to approach your video interview with the same level of professionalism and preparation as you would an in-person meeting. This guide provides practical tips and insights to help you navigate the nuances of video, helping you set yourself up to make the best possible impression on your interviewer.

• If your interview is on-camera, take the time to ensure you are well-lit from the front and that there is no bright light source (such as a window or spotlight) behind you that will prevent you from being seen clearly.

• Ensure your device is plugged in or fully charged. Don’t take any chances with your device running out of battery. Also, make sure the camera is at eye level or just slightly above.
• Take note of your surroundings. Ensure that the area behind you is appropriate and avoid a messy background for the interviewer to see. Some video conferencing platforms also support a virtual or blurred background.
• Try to seek out an area that is quiet with no interruptions. Face away from doorways and windows to avoid getting distracted during your interview.
• If you are using a device that receives notifications (text messages, email notifications, chat windows, etc.), ensure that these features are turned off to avoid possible distractions.
• Dress for success just like you would for an in-person interview. Don’t assume you will only need to wear business attire from the waist up. Take the time to get fully dressed or you may risk an embarrassing interview moment.
• Test the video conferencing software before the interview with a family member or friend to make sure everything works and to get comfortable with communicating over video, considering eye contact and body language. You want to avoid having to install the correct software minutes before the interview.

• Be sure to connect to your interview early to avoid any technical hang-ups and to be ready to greet your interviewer on time.
• An interviewer can easily see your body language during a video interview so keep this in mind when gesturing or considering eye contact. Even in a virtual setting, your attitude will be apparent.
• Be yourself! Video interviewing allows for a more personal interview experience while addressing geographical limitations. Treat your video interview as though you are in the room with the other person.
• Keep focused on your interviewer. Only look at yourself during the interview if necessary.
• Feel free to post your resume, reminders of stories, and notes about your experiences behind your laptop so you can quickly sneak a glance to help during your interview. However, don’t script your answers and try to read them verbatim during the interview.
• Sell yourself! Make sure you can speak confidently about your experiences in the workplace and/or classroom.
• Lastly, do your research on the role, the company, and the person interviewing you. Make sure you prepare your introduction and create a list of questions for the interviewer.
