Public Health Transformation Leader, Deloitte Consulting LLP
If you’d asked me a few years ago what drove me, I’d have said it’s all about understanding what people need from their health care. That was my focus as a partner in Deloitte Consulting LLP’s Life Sciences and Health Care business for years. I poured myself into research and the market—listening to patients, digging into what they truly value, and leading teams dedicated to making health care better, even more human. The teams and how we worked have changed many times, but the mission never did: Keep focused on the people, always.
Then out of nowhere, my life flipped upside down. Early 2024 hit me with a string of unexplainable symptoms—muscle twitching, bone-deep fatigue, and struggling with everyday stuff I barely used to think about. I went from researching and working to improve health care experiences for people, to living as a patient myself.
Several tests and specialist visits later, I got the news that I had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS. I suddenly found myself on the other side of the health care experience I’d spent my career designing.
There’s no sugarcoating it; navigating ALS is tough. After my diagnosis, I started on what meds were available and threw myself into physical therapy, determined to hold onto my strength and abilities as long as I could. I also slowly came to the realization that I would need to step back from full-time work. In January 2026, I’ll officially leave my role as a Deloitte partner to focus on spending time with loved ones and living life to the fullest, with as much independence as I can.
When I first shared my diagnosis, I received pure compassion from Deloitte and my colleagues. No stacks of paperwork, no elaborate processes—just a heart-to-heart with leadership, who told me, “Take the time you need; we’ve got your back.” That kind of trust and flexibility says everything to me about Deloitte’s culture. I had folks from all corners of the organization, past and present, reaching out to check on me, lift my spirits, and just be there. Honestly, the support was overwhelming—and I mean that in the best possible way.
From the benefits side, Deloitte didn’t miss a beat. My meds—which, let’s be real, can be expensive and not always covered by all insurance providers, were approved and delivered with zero hassle. Filing for disability was straightforward and handled with genuine care. I felt like no matter what I needed, Deloitte had my back. That level of care and respect made me feel seen as a person, not just a professional.
Looking back, I can honestly say I’m grateful for the work, the opportunities, and most of all, the people. My whole career was about making health care more accessible and about the people. Now, living as a patient myself, I see firsthand how important that work really is and how much it matters to be surrounded by a community that totally has your back. Life moves a bit slower these days, but my appreciation for every moment and the unwavering support I’ve received is stronger than ever.
As of January 2026, David Betts has retired from his role at Deloitte due to his ALS diagnosis.
