Director in the Sustainability Assurance team and keen angler, London

I’m from London, but my dad worked in Africa a lot when I was growing up, which gave me the opportunity to see different ways of life. I’ve always had a passion for the natural world and thought I’d grow up to be an archaeologist. However, after school, I decided to study environmental politics and economics. That’s where I became really interested in the environmental impact of businesses, where there are societal costs like pollution, and those costs have an impact on the population. After graduating I completed an internship with the United Nations in Geneva, where I learned more about the concept of corporate social responsibility. This inspired me to do a masters in the subject, before kickstarting my career with sustainability firms, analysing the sustainability ratings of different organisations. I also worked in carbon consultancy, advising companies on measuring their greenhouse gas impacts.

I joined Deloitte three years ago, after reading an interesting article about the ways accountants were solving the climate crisis. I’m now a director in the Sustainability Assurance team, working with qualified auditors and subject matter experts to ensure that businesses are accurately reporting their sustainability data. I’m an expert in greenhouse gas accounting, so I always help the team interpret the correct protocols. I also do a lot of training and education on sustainability. We have a diverse team, which means a wealth of different experience and opinions. Working together, we aim to challenge companies to benefit the public interest, and our diverse level of experience helps us to achieve that. We have so many people from different parts of the world, it means we have a greater insight into the way different countries operate. Meanwhile, I also work across Deloitte with other colleagues across our service lines, to support sustainable finance development in other areas of the business.

I drop my daughter off at nursery and take the Uber boat to the London office for some meetings. I love the peace and quiet in the morning, as well as the river views. | I’m leading a meeting to close a project. A lot of hard work has gone into this, so we have a team dinner to celebrate. | I head to Bristol, one of our regional hubs, to meet the team there. I take part in the bake sale they’re having and meet with a company CFO to talk about sustainability regulations. | It’s a team day in the office , which is a great way to catch up with some team members that I’m not directly working with. In the afternoon we brainstorm our strategy for next year. | I’m taking a half day, so I pick up my daughter at lunchtime and head to the south coast for a long, relaxing weekend. |
I’ve got a three-year-old daughter, so I enjoy spending time with her. We go swimming every weekend and I take her to football practice. I also love fishing, so when I’m not with my family, my happiest place is standing in a river listening to the water around me. I find going out to beautiful places off-the beaten track is a great way to clear my head. I’ve been lucky enough to see kingfishers, as well as otters and squirrels swimming across the river.
Our teams are very diverse and it’s really important to create an inclusive culture, so all those views can be heard. Often the quietest person in the room has the best contribution, so listening is key.
In a tech-driven world, it’s easy to become reliant on email. But sometimes it’s good to just phone people and talk, and it can make it less easy to misinterpret a conversation.

Secret Amazon: Into the Wild with Lucy Shepherd
Into the Wild is an amazing documentary that follows Lucy Shepherd on an extremely challenging expedition through the Amazon rainforest. It reminded me of a book that was in the house as a child called Mato Grosso, which was all about that area of Brazilian rainforest and the people who live there. As well as showing viewers the importance of resilience, it’s also a great watch for anyone with an interest in the natural world, indigenous communities and navigating challenging environments.
