How did you get your role at Deloitte?

During university I did Deloitte’s Summer Vacation Scheme in Audit and Assurance, which was brilliant. I got the chance to work on a wide range of projects in lots of different sectors and learnt a lot about business. I returned after completing my degree to start the graduate programme in the Southampton office. While I loved the culture of the firm, I was keen to do more reporting in the environment, social and governance areas. At the time Deloitte didn’t have a team in place so I went to a cosmetics company, to work on sustainable projects. By the time I’d been there for two years, Deloitte had established its own ESG team and I decided to go back. I wanted the opportunity to work for a big firm again, and to be working on a huge range of different projects.

What is your role?

I’m a director in the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) assurance team. We check the sustainability and social data that companies are publicly sharing is an accurate reflection of business. For example, I’ll look at their carbon footprint, their diversity metrics, as well as things like gender gaps and board structure. What I love most is that every day is different and there’s so much to learn. I’ve had the opportunity to learn about high-profile companies and I get to ensure that these firms are held accountable.

What does your role involve?

My role as a senior Audit Associate involves working for the Audit Delivery Centre in Newcastle, to perform checks on the audits we do. I look for anything that might be incorrect or missing, and flag any potential challenges to the wider team. It's really important that the audits we perform and the reports we produce are accurate and high quality. The information we are providing is helping to build trust between businesses and the general public, and I'm proud to be part of a team that will hold businesses to account.

What networks are you part of?

I was diagnosed with autism in 2021, and became involved with the Neurodiversity Network at Deloitte. I've discovered there are lots of really useful forms of support available. My neurodiversity has become more apparent as I have increased in seniority, but I know that I can always ask for help.One example of this is the software tool I use for recording conversations. It will create a transcript for me, so that I can go back over the conversation and look for any nuance I might have missed. I also get involved with webinars and speak at events to help raise awareness by sharing my own story.

What do you do?

I joined Deloitte to work in the Analytics and Modelling team for Audit and Assurance. The world of analytics is so broad, and you can do so much with it. One example is 'data visualisation', where we set out data in a way that's easy for businesses to see and understand, to help them make important decisions. Problem solving is also a big part of my role, as well as coding and design, which are actually very creative.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

There are so many different types of software you can learn and so much diversity in the role. I really enjoy that cycle of learning and using the learning for positive development and problem solving, to help companies. I love feeling like I have made a difference to the businesses we're working with, and having a positive impact in society in turn. I also enjoy other aspects of life at Deloitte, including my role as a volunteer mentor and my work to support events and activities for the East Asian community, which is part of the Multicultural Network. There's lots of things to get involved with here, whatever your interests are.

How did you get your job at Deloitte?

I went through a recruiter, who contacted me via LinkedIn. At the time I was working for a smaller firm and looking for the next step up. I was already keen to move jobs, and when the recruiter told me they had connections with Deloitte, it sounded like an exciting opportunity. They were able to guide me through the recruitment process, which was really helpful.

What inspired you to join from a smaller firm?

I wanted to challenge myself in Big 4 audit. Working in a smaller firm really helps you to develop core skills and you get good opportunities for training, as well as full exposure to the file and testing of financial statements. However, I didn't have any experience working with FTSE listed companies, which I felt was important to progress to the next stage of my career. I'm really glad I made the move, it's been a very positive experience. The induction was especially helpful, as it allowed me time to settle in and gain some more knowledge of Deloitte's audit approach. You also get assigned a buddy, who can help answer any questions you have. At the same time the engagement teams and people I've worked with are all extremely supportive.

How did you get your job at Deloitte?

Before joining, I was working at a smaller firm. I wasn't actively looking for new roles, but when I was contacted by a recruiter I thought the opportunity at Deloitte seemed really exciting. I wanted to gain new experience working with larger companies and global operations, as well as obtaining more exposure to International Financial Reporting and Auditing standards. The idea of being part of a larger engagement team, with opportunities to manage people, also really appealed to me.

What was positive about the transition from a smaller firm?

For me the step up in size was exactly what I was looking for, and I'm very grateful to have been given the opportunity. I've also had the chance to meet lots of new people which I've really enjoyed, as Deloitte has expertise in pretty much all business areas you can think of. Joining from a smaller firm has been a real boost for my career and I'm excited about what the next steps will bring. In future I'd like to do international secondment opportunities, as well as continuing my learning and development.

What attracted you to Deloitte and what surprised you about working here?

I moved to Deloitte from another Big Four firm in October 2019, because of Deloitte's focus on diversity and wellbeing. I really liked the initiatives around culture, values and inclusion, which make everyone at the firm feel valued. For me the role of audit has always been about getting the job done, which has meant neglecting both my physical and mental wellbeing in the past. Working for Deloitte is completely different. Not only do managers help clients through insights and recommendations, there is also a strong commitment to people, diversity of thought and individual wellbeing.

How do you explain your job to friends and family?

In the simplest terms, my jobs is to audit the financial statements of entities to provide assurance that they are accurate, reliable and free from significant errors. The role allows me to see how different businesses operate and to gain an understanding of different industries. I love being able to build great relationships with the teams I work with, as well as the opportunities to gain knowledge from other like-minded people at Deloitte.

Our Large & Complex Audit team works with clients that include banks, insurers, public sector organisations and some of the largest listed organisations around the world.

Our Portfolio Audit group focuses on the audit of entrepreneurial, high growth businesses. Our clients span a wide range of sectors including privately owned corporates, real estate funds, pension schemes, financial services brokers, investment managers, securitisations and other organisations.

Assurance

We have four main areas in Assurance:

Analytics
High quality and transparent reporting on data use and compliance of data handling is critical for both regulatory compliance and rebuilding the trust of the public. Our dedicated Analytics teams specialise in helping clients understand their data. By working seamlessly with the Specialist, Modelling and Analytics, Central and Securitisation teams, we are able to get client projects over the line, often against challenging timelines.
Financial Assurance
For those charged with governance, the focus on setting clear, high quality reporting standards has never been greater. The Financial Assurance team specialises in assuring the financial statements, transactions and accounting. By collaborating with other teams and our global network of specialists, they deliver assurance that protects the public interest and fosters even greater levels of trust.
Regulatory Assurance
Regulatory reform continues to shape the Audit & Assurance landscape. The Regulatory Assurance team specialises in helping those charged with governance to build trust and confidence within their business. The expertise within the Regulatory Assurance team spans across both Banking and Capital Markets and Insurance.
IT Specialists
Our purpose is to serve the public interest and provide high-quality, independent IT external audit and controls assurance services.

Technology is at the core of modern business and continues to evolve rapidly both as an enabler and a product offering. As dependency on IT increases so does the level of IT risk. Our cross-industry portfolio involves a mix of IT external audit and other controls assurance work (e.g., third party assurance, SOC reports etc).

Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) Assurance

Sustainability and environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) have become a key focus for businesses and investors across the UK. Voluntary and regulatory reporting requirements, such as the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) are also increasing the scale and scope of corporate sustainability disclosures. More than ever companies are being obliged by audit committees to report ESG information in their annual report and accounts. As a result, boards and audit committees need detailed, accurate information and disclosure on ESG issues. Our ESG assurance services are critical to supporting businesses with this – and we have a range of experts on hand to help. Our deep subject matter expertise helps businesses to feel confident that they are disclosing correct and accurate information in a timely fashion. By working in our ESG teams, you’ll be helping to support companies in their green agenda, as well as ensuring accountability for the public.

Reporting and Frameworks Assurance

The quality of UK corporate reporting is under scrutiny, with a need for a standardised and consistent measurement and disclosure of non-financial information. You’ll be working in our Reporting and Frameworks Assurance team to provides assurance across the ESG information recorded in annual reports and sustainability reports. We also determine whether companies have accurately implemented their specified ESG frameworks, including the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework.

ESG Financing

Our ESG financing team provides assurance expertise and related services across the range of ESG financing. This includes green, social, sustainable and transition related financing such as bonds, loans and other debt facilities.

IT specialists - Audit & Assurance

As the name suggests, our IT Specialist (IT Audit & Assurance) team works across both the audit and the assurance parts of our business – focusing specifically on technology.

IT Audit: We work across all parts of the audit business to assess the risk around IT systems that generate financially relevant information. You’ll learn how IT supports business objectives and key processes. For example, what systems are used to run a bank, telecoms company, software provider, water company etc. You’ll learn what risks exist in these systems and what controls companies have in place to mitigate these risks. You’ll also see the impact of new technology on business as well as challenging audited entities as their control environments develop. Our purpose is to serve the public interest and help give confidence that the financial information going out to stakeholders (e.g. shareholders, employees, regulators etc.) is correct.
IT Assurance: You’ll work on a variety of projects with some great clients – focusing on IT assurance. Even though IT environments are becoming more and more complex and critical for day-to-day business operations, an organisation’s management may still not be aware of the exact risks faced by its IT environments. All of the core skills you develop through IT Audit will stand you in good stead for this broader IT assurance work. This will include helping to deliver controls assurance engagements which allow service organisations and other third parties (e.g. cloud system providers, market infrastructure operators) to provide controls assurance under a recognized reporting standard to their customers – these engagements are critical in today’s extended business environment.

Central Audit

Central Audit plays an important role in supporting our audit business with Project Management and Delivery Centre activities to ensure we provide outstanding quality services to our client-facing colleagues. You’ll be hands on right from the beginning.
