As technology continues to reshape the world of work, the skills we need are evolving fast.
For many, the biggest barrier isn’t learning something new; it’s access to opportunity. Deloitte’s reskilling programme is designed to change that. It creates structured pathways for people to move into new roles across the firm, even if they don’t yet have every skill required, recognising the growing importance of transferable skills in meeting the business challenges of the future.
With targeted training, mentoring and real project experience, those taking part are supported to build new skills and transition into areas where demand is growing fast, such as software engineering and artificial intelligence.
By focusing on potential as well as experience, the programme enables people to take their careers in a new direction, often in ways that wouldn’t have been possible on traditional routes.
For Rebekah McNair, a manager in technology and transformation at Deloitte, that shift has meant stepping into a completely different role.
“Before the reskilling programme, I had fragmented knowledge but lacked the big picture,” she explains. “It helped me understand how different technologies come together to create solutions, and that’s what gave me the confidence to try something new.”
Rebekah started her career in quality engineering, where the focus is on testing and identifying issues. It’s a role that demands precision and attention to detail, but it can also feel a step removed from the end-to-end creation of digital solutions.
Through the solutions engineering reskilling programme, she was able to build new capabilities and step into a different kind of role, one focused on designing and building, rather than testing.
“What I’ve really enjoyed is the shift to building something from the ground up. It’s a completely different way of thinking.”
That change in mindset has been just as important as the technical training.“The programme didn’t just teach me new skills; it helped me see where I could apply them,” she explains. “That’s what made the move feel possible.”
Crucially, the opportunity itself was something Rebekah may not have had otherwise.
“Without this programme, I wouldn’t have been able to move into this kind of role,” she says. “You don’t always get the chance to step into something new if you don’t already have all the experience. This gave me that chance and the support to make it work.”
"Deloitte’s reskilling programme enables our people to redefine and reshape their careers."
By removing the expectation that people need to meet every requirement before applying, the programme opens up new pathways. Colleagues bring their existing strengths and build the rest through learning, mentoring and on-the-job experience.
This approach is already making an impact across the firm.
Through pilot programmes in solutions engineering and trustworthy AI, among others, colleagues are gaining new capabilities and moving into areas where skills are in high demand. This enables Deloitte to respond more quickly to evolving client needs, while making better use of skills and experience already within the organisation.
It also supports a culture where mobility and continuous learning are part of everyday working life, where careers are not fixed, but evolving.
For Rebekah, that shift has changed how she sees her future.
“It’s shown me that you don’t have to stay in one lane,” she says. “With the right support, you can learn something completely new and go in a different direction. That’s really empowering.”
Her experience reflects something broader: when people are given the chance to reskill, they don’t just gain new technical capabilities; they gain confidence in what they can do next.
Tom Noble, director of engineering solutions, reflects: “Growth doesn’t happen by chance. It happens when people are given the opportunity, support and encouragement to develop in new directions. We are committed to and excited about creating those opportunities for our people.”
As industries continue to evolve, the need for reskilling is becoming increasingly important for firms like Deloitte, but also for society as a whole.
By investing in our people and creating accessible routes into future-focused roles, Deloitte is working to address that challenge, building critical skills, helping people adapt and showing how organisations can take a more inclusive approach to developing talent.
For us, it’s about creating an environment where learning never stops and where careers are defined not by where someone started but by where they can go next.
And for people like Rebekah, it means something simpler, but no less powerful: the chance to change direction and the support to make it happen.
