Climate change and biodiversity loss are interconnected and accelerating, yet the nature finance gap remains a significant barrier to action.

Biodiversity markets have the potential to help close that gap by mobilising private capital towards conservation, restoration, and wider climate and nature outcomes. Realising this potential, however, will require stronger alignment between buyers, investors, project developers, and market enablers, supported by credible data, robust integrity frameworks, and trusted assurance.

This interactive COP17 session will bring together demand-side and supply-side perspectives to explore the conditions needed for biodiversity deals to be successfully developed, financed, and transacted. Through expert insights and facilitated breakout discussions, the session will examine current market barriers, emerging opportunities, and the practical actions needed to support credible and scalable biodiversity markets.

Designed for organisations involved in developing, financing, purchasing, or enabling biodiversity outcomes, the session will bring together buyers, investors and corporates; project developers and intermediaries; governments and policymakers; assurance and verification providers; NGOs, standard setters and market infrastructure organisations.

Participants will gain:

  • A clearer understanding of the emerging biodiversity market landscape and the challenges affecting deal flow
  • Insights into buyer needs, project developer challenges, integrity initiatives, and assurance expectations
  • Opportunities to identify and prioritise the most significant barriers and enablers influencing biodiversity transactions
  • Perspectives from stakeholders across different markets and jurisdictions
  • Greater clarity on the roles of buyers, developers, governments, assurance providers, and market facilitators
  • Practical priorities for strengthening market integrity, mobilising capital, and scaling biodiversity outcomes.

By bringing together diverse perspectives from across the ecosystem, the session aims to help shape the pathways needed for credible, investable, and scalable biodiversity markets.

Please note, this session will be held as part of the official COP17 programme in Yerevan, Armenia.
