The Chief of Staff plays a pivotal role in key strategic areas, providing unique insights into the CEO's priorities. Despite its strategic impact, no comprehensive studies have examined the Chief of Staff-CEO relationship.
This point of view addresses this gap by exploring (1) the partnership's dynamics, enablers, barriers, and impact; and (2) Chief of Staff responses to current geopolitical and economic pressures, offering a proxy for CEO views.
To enable a more comprehensive and in-depth analysis, this point of view adopted a mixed-method approach that combines quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The quantitative analysis draws on survey responses from 121 global members of The Chief of Staff Association, while the qualitative analysis is informed by multiple in-depth interviews.
From this point of view, two key trends emerge: first, the symbiotic partnership between the Chief of Staff and CEO, with trust as its cornerstone; second, the Chief of Staff's strategic role in guiding CEOs through uncertainty and complexity in today's evolving geopolitical and business landscape.
This point of view concludes with insights into these themes within the Financial Services industry - a leading adopter of the Chief of Staff role - where trust emerges as an even more critical pillar of the Chief of Staff-CEO partnership.
