Audit and Assurance at Deloitte: An Interns inside view
Ella, a Commerce student at University College Cork, joined Deloitte to explore her career path and discover what makes a firm truly different,the genuine people invested in her growth.
Why Deloitte Felt Different
I began my journey with Deloitte as a Commerce student at University College Cork. I explored different industries at grad fairs and networking events, but Deloitte stood out to me for a reason; the people. Every interaction I had at a Deloitte stand was friendly and insightful. When I joined the firm, that did not change. No one is too busy to help you out, and if they are, they make sure to find you someone who can. They value curiosity and offer guidance and support all the way through. There is no shortage of genuine people within this firm, who are invested in your career and that’s what drew me to it.
Finding my Voice
One of the most valuable opportunities I had during this internship was the Leadership Boost Day in Dublin. We interacted with interns in all different departments who I really learnt a lot from. We listened to inspiring talks and advice from guest speakers and Deloitte Alumni.
We collaborated in diverse teams and shared views in a workshop to enhance our public speaking and leadership skills. What I valued most was the mutual encouragement, watching people overcome their nerves while others did the same for me. This was what the internship program was about, enhancing our skills, learning from others and facing our ambitions head on, even the things that fear us.
What I’d Tell you
Be curious and talk to as many people as you can. It takes a while to get comfortable in a new environment. We can be nervous to approach new people and jump into unfamiliar situations, but the only way past that is to embrace the challenge.
By asking questions, you show curiosity, complete your work more accurately and make valuable connections. Deloitte believes in making an impact, but I didn’t realise that impact could also be on me. The people here encouraged me to speak out, embrace every learning opportunity and made me feel valued and supported. Through this experience, I have built strong interpersonal skills and learned irreplaceable lessons that only come from living it.
Looking Ahead
The Deloitte Early Careers Programme has provided me with a network, an experience and a learning opportunity. These last few months, I have grown both personally and professionally. I’ve embraced friendships and connections that I’ll value for life, and I have built skills that I will carry with me throughout my career. I look forward to progressing into the next chapter of my career journey and embracing the future ahead!
