People’s Impact Fund

Young adults from underserved communities offered greater support to reduce barriers to employment and facilitate a smooth transition to the workforce

The youth unemployment rate stands at 8.8% in Ireland, indicating the challenge for young people in securing employment (CSO, 2024). For young people not in employment, education or training, they face a range of barriers when seeking access to the labour market.

In 2024, Deloitte Ireland, Rethink Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development collaborated to create the €500,000 one year People’s Impact Fund. This supports projects working to promote equity of opportunity and access to employment, by developing the employability skills of young adults and/or facilitating their employment.

Adrienne Daly, our Social Impact Lead, explains “We reached out to Rethink Ireland, who we knew to be leaders in the space of supporting social innovations across Ireland.  We had a clear vision of what we wanted to achieve through the fund which was to create access to skills, education and employment for underserved communities which aligned to our Social Impact ambition at Deloitte.”

“What set Rethink Ireland apart for us is that our investment included not just monetary support but also access to professional advice for awardees so they can scale their impact sustainably. Rethink Ireland also helped us narrow our focus and suggested that we look at projects that equip young people, from ages fifteen to thirty, with the skills they need to seek employment with confidence.”

"The People’s Impact Fund has evolved from a €50,000 fund in 2021 which looked to support a number of charity projects suggested by our own staff. It ran at that level for a couple of years but as we reflected on the scale and reach of its impact, it became clear that we needed to reach a wider network of organisations focused on making innovative and sustainable impact in the community."

Rethink Ireland’s CEO, Deirdre Mortell emphasised the importance of this initiative: “The People’s Impact Fund is a vital step towards ensuring that all young people in Ireland have access to the resources they need to succeed. At Rethink Ireland, we believe that with the right support, every young adult can find their path to meaningful employment; we are proud to partner with Deloitte Ireland on this fund.”

The process of launching the fund to finally announcing the awardees took about nine months and there were lots of opportunities for our people to get involved along the way, from reviewing applications to sitting on interview panels.

In June 2025, we announced our final four awardees of the People’s Impact Fund. The final four projects selected are being led by organisations taking a holistic approach in breaking the barriers to employment facing young people. They are creating better awareness of career options and opportunities for employment, developing skills in young people desired by employers and creating support & social networks for young people to access and thrive in employment.

"Our role with Rethink is to support social innovators with the resources to they need to scale their ideas, with the potential to grow from a local community initiative to something that can be replicated across the whole country. While we’re not yet at the end of our first year, the initial feedback has been excellent and Deloitte is actively considering rolling out the People’s Impact Fund over a multi-year period."
