Immigration News October 2025

EES implementation set to begin shortly

The Entry/Exit system (EES) is moving forward and will begin its early phases 12 October 2025. EES will replace traditional physical passport stamping with a digital system, modernizing travel within the Schengen area.

Following earlier delays, the entry/exit system (EES) will be rolled out in phases starting 12 October 2025, with full implementation expected by 10 April 2026.

The new digital system will enable the electronic registration of non-EU nationals travelling for short-stay purposes and crossing the borders of participating European countries, including Denmark.

EES will replace passport stamps by digitally tracking entries, exits and refusals, modernizing travel within the Schengen region. Biometric data collection will also be a part of the new system, enhancing travel security.

Key benefits include:

  • Quicker travel across borders once fully implemented
  • Prevention of overstays
  • Increased security

EES applies to:

  • Non-EU nationals travelling for short stays to European countries participating in EES
  • Both short-stay visa holders and visa exempt nationals

EES does not apply to:

  • Holders of residence permits
  • Holders of long-stay visas

The system will make it easier to track and detect overstays, ensuring adherence to the maximum 90 day stay within any 180-day period in the Schengen area, with increased scrutiny on compliance.

During the gradual deployment period, travelers should expect longer waiting times at borders.

We do not yet know how SIRI will implement the new EES system to assess applicants’ legal stay in Denmark.

Additionally, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is still under development and scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026.
