Joining Deloitte: Initial insights from a recent graduate

In the following article we hear from Jan, a recent graduate of Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), who shares his journey from academic life to joining Deloitte’s dynamic Tax team. From initial impressions and onboarding experiences to early project involvement and professional development opportunities, he shares what it truly means to start a career in professional services.

Tell us a little about yourself, and why you chose to apply to Deloitte.

I graduated from ZHAW with a Bachelor's degree in International Management, which included a year abroad at the Universidad del Pacífico in Lima, Peru. During my final year of studies, I gained practical experience working part time at a fiduciary company in Zug. This role provided initial exposure to the tax world, sparking a keen interest in the field.

Throughout this period, I attended numerous career events since I was eager to develop myself further and get more international experience, moving beyond traditional fiduciary work. Deloitte in particular stood out due to its professionalism and the individuals I encountered at these events, which differentiated Deloitte from its competitors. My initial positive impressions were further solidified upon meeting some of my current team members, making it clear why I wished to become a part of Deloitte. Besides the great people, I was also attracted by the opportunity to work with large, international clients, which offers valuable professional experience.

How did your expectations of working at Deloitte compare to the reality of your first few weeks?

My initial expectations of a highly collaborative and supportive environment at Deloitte were not only met but significantly exceeded during my first few weeks.

What impressed me was the immediate and inclusive nature of our team's project work. Despite being new, I felt like an integral part of every project from day one, understanding and actively contributing to the broader objectives. At the same time, I was prepared for longer working hours which do occur occasionally, but I see this as a natural part of the steep learning curve at the start and an opportunity to grow.

Furthermore, the engagement from Partners and managers has been very encouraging. They are approachable and willing to share their knowledge, while also providing guidance and constructive feedback that support our professional development.

Can you describe the onboarding process? What aspects did you find most helpful, and were there any surprises?

The onboarding process began with a welcome week attended by all new joiners across Deloitte Switzerland. This provided a great opportunity to familiarise myself with the culture and values of Deloitte. This week included a series of well-organised and engaging workshops, including a Business Chemistry workshop where we tested the participants' behavioural profiles and practised teaming techniques, which were both informative and practical. A highlight was the group dinner which created a relaxed environment to connect with my new colleagues. Additionally, I really appreciated the chance to meet and network with people from other service lines, including some colleagues outside the M&A Tax team with whom I have maintained contact since.

What was the biggest adjustment you had to make when transitioning into the consulting world from student life?

The biggest adjustment I had to make was adapting to the fast-paced and client-focused environment. Unlike academic settings, consulting demands quick problem solving, effective communication, and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. It also requires a high degree of flexibility, as what you planned to work on today might suddenly change because something more urgent needs attention.

How has Deloitte supported your professional growth and learning in this initial period?

Already in the third week, all first-year tax consultants started attending weekly internal training sessions focused on Swiss tax law, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Additionally, a Partner generously dedicated time each week to deliver a specialised, tailored M&A programme. This weekly internal training guided us through an entire M&A transaction, exploring all potential tax implications and scenarios in detail.

Was there a specific mentor, buddy, or colleague who provided invaluable support during your first six months? If so, how did they help?

The managers in our M&A Tax team have been really welcoming and supportive during my first few months. They not only guide and encourage us but also challenge us to grow both professionally and personally.

We have regular opportunities to connect and communicate openly, which has made a significant difference. Every two weeks, we hold a manager/consultant chat where we can discuss any questions or concerns in an open and collaborative environment. In addition, I meet once a month with my Performance Development Leader to review feedback and assess my progress.

Overall, it has been a pleasure to work alongside them and learn from their experience. Having once been in a similar position, they truly understand the challenges and offer valuable assistance and insight.

How was your onboarding into client work? What has your first project experience been like?

My first project, which I was fortunate to start contributing to as early as my third week at Deloitte, involved a buyside tax due diligence, during which we collaborated closely with multiple teams across Luxembourg and Uruguay. It was a great opportunity to work with different Deloitte member firms and gain insight into the diverse and dynamic nature of M&A transactions, each of which is unique.

I was fortunate to have strong support from my manager throughout the process, which made the experience even more rewarding. Additionally, participating in client calls early on gave me valuable exposure to client interactions and project management.

What are you most looking forward to during your next six months at Deloitte?

Every day at Deloitte brings new opportunities, challenges, and exciting projects, which keep me motivated and engaged. In the next six months I look forward to collaborating across different workstreams, meeting new people, and expanding my technical knowledge in tax.

On a personal note, I am starting the training to become a Swiss Certified Tax Expert, which is both demanding and rewarding. Deloitte fully supports this further education, covering all costs and granting me study leave to help balance work and study commitments. Looking ahead to the summer, I am particularly excited about watching some of the FIFA World Cup games with my work colleagues and enjoying sunny days together.
