Your future at Deloitte's tax department? A story full of opportunity, innovation and collaboration

Your career at Deloitte Tax & Legal

At Deloitte, tax is about much more than just rules and figures: innovation, multidisciplinary teams and a human approach are central. This is evident from the stories of Sofie (37) and Olga (32). Each with their own story, they found exactly what they were looking for at Deloitte: expertise, impact and a strong team.

Olga's story at Deloitte started seven years ago, after gaining experience at a few firms in Spain. "From the outset, I wanted to gain a lot of experience within large organizations and in an international context," she says. "Deloitte Belgium offered me the perfect opportunity to pursue this goal."

In the meantime, she feels at home at Deloitte as manager of tax technology consulting. "I coordinate a team of seven consultants with expertise in technology, data and processes, and tax. By combining that knowledge, we are always ahead of the curve and are able to create added value for our customers." A critical and creative attitude is essential in this regard. "That's what our customers appreciate."

Full of challenges and opportunities

Sofie, who switched to Deloitte three years ago, also sees that humanity. "I have always been open to new challenges," she says. "The conversations with the team that would eventually become mine piqued my interest. Especially the chance to focus on what I liked to do was very tempting."

Sofie made the jump and that turned out to be the right choice. "The promise of a personal growth trajectory and career opportunities has been fulfilled: since October I have been director of indirect tax, with a focus on e-invoicing." It means that she works directly with customers on e-invoicing and VAT issues on a daily basis. Sofie leads and supports various teams within a larger group of 135 employees.

Innovation on a daily basis

What strikes Olga and Sofie is the innovative approach within Deloitte. "We bring solutions to the customer in different ways: through interactive workshops and modern tools, but also through Nzyme, our methodology for complex challenges, and through Nexus, our innovation hub," says Sofie. "As a partner, we always look at the specific needs of the customer to determine the right solution and technology." Olga adds: "We focus on understanding the customer's reality and guide it step by step. As a result, you can see the impact quickly."

This approach requires close cooperation between colleagues. This was evident in a challenging project in which Sofie's team analysed the e-invoicing rules of the 27 EU member states. "The project started during the summer holidays, which was an extra challenge because of the vacation days of colleagues. I learned to let go and trust others. I really felt that: cooperation and trust." The project had a successful ending, and the team ended it with a dinner.

Olga and Sofie consider the interaction between legislation, technology, processes and the business reality of the specific customer to be an asset. "In a domain like e-invoicing, there is a lot of work at the moment, but we can fall back on our teams with colleagues who go the extra mile for each other," says Olga. Of course, staying future-proof requires continuous expertise building. "We are in constant consultation and have a team that researches changes on a daily basis. We also consult worldwide, with colleagues in Germany, for example, but also in Ghana."

Sofie sees how Deloitte is committed to growth. "We regularly organise internal training courses, tailored to every level: from substantive, tax-technical training courses, to specific sessions on soft skills, for example. Lifelong learning is central. In that respect, everyone can indicate their own needs in consultation with a Deloitte coach, or simply talk to someone. You can easily reach everyone."

And the future? Olga looks at it calmly and above all feels confidence. "I know I won't feel pressure, but I will feel support. At Deloitte, a career does not necessarily have to go up vertically, horizontal is just as valuable. There are plenty of opportunities here to develop in different ways, which gives me both the challenge and the clear career perspective I need. The ambition and the opportunities to grow are certainly there."
