Hi Alastar, why did you want to join Deloitte?
I've been at Deloitte since completing my Strategy & Operations team internship in early 2017. My first four years were with Monitor Deloitte, developing and executing strategies for major consumer products clients.
I recently joined Industrial Redesign & Innovation to pursue my passion for sustainability and growing Australia's nascent circular economy. Now, I'm working alongside some of Australia's, and the world's, largest clients to deliver programs that respond to global warming and that institute real, tangible change for society and our environment.
What project opportunities have you been most excited about since joining the team?
For me, playing a key role in the growth of Australia's container deposit schemes has driven nationwide litter reduction and promoted the development of domestic recycling capability.
Is there anything you would like to share about working at Deloitte that surprises you or that people wouldn't expect?
Flexibility – Deloitte is fundamentally committed to creating an environment that accommodates individuals to work in a manner that best suits them (i.e. when, where, and how you want to work).
Diversity & Inclusion – we like to think of ourselves as pioneers in supporting initiatives that drive better outcomes for D&I in the workplace and wider community, such as through gender pay equality, parental leave, and many others.
And lastly… If you could go back in time, what tip would you give to your younger self about building your career?
We are looking for diversity of thought and opinion – don't worry about who you're up against for a role, the important thing is to value your own skills and experience.
Meet Audrey Gan, Senior Manager in our Industrial Redesign & Innovation team!
Hi Audrey, tell us, what prompted you to join Deloitte?
During COVID, most of the world was in a state of lockdown and uncertainty, including myself. During this time, I started contemplating wider societal issues – and thinking hard about what problems I'd enjoy solving during my 9-5 day job.
Right after COP26, I was determined to pivot to helping solve Climate and Sustainability issues, knowing that if I managed to do that, I would find true career fulfillment. At that juncture, Deloitte and I found one another. It was made known during my interview that Deloitte also had a real interest in solving these same gnarly problems for their clients. It was hard to say no, and the rest is history.
What is something that's surprised you about working here, something you think people mightn't expect?
In Australia alone, Deloitte Consulting employs more than 5,000 consultants.
The depth and breadth of our expertise in our local firm continues to surprise me. Backgrounds I have seen so far span from your typical engineers, bankers and lawyers, to public servants, artists, farmers, musicians, agribusiness experts, and the list goes on. Not many workplaces can boast that amount of diversity and capability in my experience.
Tell us about an exciting development opportunity you've recently participated in...
I've recently participated in the Asia Pacific Academy, a 7-week intensive course that culminates in a Pitch Competition. Our challenge was to develop a digital solution for Governments and Public Service to help drive increased, sustainable behavioural change from citizens.
I worked with colleagues from Japan, Taiwan, China, Singapore, and Australia to develop an MVP that seeks to address this problem. It was enlightening to hear from our Global Experts across the firm on the innovative Climate and Sustainability work we have done and continue to do, and how Deloitte plans to take that to the next frontier as we lead into the decade of climate action.
And lastly… If you could go back in time, what tip would you give to your younger self about building your career?
One of my favourite motivational quotes is this: "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid".
This quote constantly reminds me that everyone has their own unique strengths and expertise, and it's OK to not be the master of every single skill set. As you build a career and work in a team, especially in the Consulting industry, you will come to realise that the best work is done when people put their best strengths forward. That's when the real magic begins.
Meet Angus Lau, Graduate in our Sustainability & Climate (Social Impact) team!
Hi Angus, tell us a little about yourself and what you do each day!
I am a light-hearted and easy-going individual who wants to make a real difference through the work I do. Here on the Deloitte Social Impact team, we specialise in supporting clients to navigate an increasingly complex sector and to maximise the holistic impact they have on people and communities.
My role as a graduate is to actively engage with and learn from the awesome team and clients I work with to find ways in which I can add value. What I do on a day-to-day basis and love about my role is that I can be doing anything from helping shape an organisation's overall strategic direction to attending a Deloitte consulting festival!
What interested you to join Deloitte?
It can be an incredibly overwhelming and daunting experience trying to decide what career path you want to pursue. Deloitte turned out to be the perfect place for me because the people here truly care about helping you navigate and chart your own career path. Whether it's through an incredible coaching and support network or the infinite opportunities the Pathways Program can open for you, Deloitte will provide you with the tools needed to discover your passion.
What are some things about working here that has surprised you, or you think people wouldn't expect?
A common misconception before joining was that Deloitte only hires those outstanding overachievers who shaped their personalities around Leonardo Di Caprio in the Wolf of Wall Street. From the outside, it seemed like everyone who worked at Deloitte had an unattainable specific set of skills and experience.
I soon discovered that this was as far from the truth as possible. There isn't a set formula for success-- everyone you meet here is as different and unique as you. Deloitte showed me the power of diversity, especially by making a constant effort to make everyone's voice heard. This range of perspectives makes Deloitte such an interesting place to work.
When thinking about your career at Deloitte, what are you most looking forward to?
Big cliché, but I am most looking forward to working with the amazing people around me. The depth of experience and innovative thinking that makes up Deloitte means there is always something new to learn from working with somebody on the team. Tackling complex problems with these remarkable people is something that motivates me to get out of bed every day.
And lastly… If you could go back in time, what tip would you give to your younger self about building your career?
Don't get caught up in the frenzy of trying to be the applicant with the longest resume! It's easy to fall into the spiral of mindless competitiveness with the person next to you to secure the job you've always wanted. Recruiters are looking for people who can think on their feet and bring a unique perspective to the table. The way you do this isn't by being the best candidate on paper. It's by constantly putting yourself out of your comfort zone and being curious about the things that interest you.
Meet Priscilla Tan, Principal in our Asset Management & Performance team!
Hi Priscilla, tell us a little about your background, what you work on and why Deloitte!
I am a Principal in our Asset Management & Performance team with over 20 years of business consulting experience.
I work closely with clients in the Energy & Resources sector to improve operational productivity and navigate/ transition through complex organisational change.
I'm originally from Singapore and wanted a change in scenery, working environment and lifestyle – so I relocated to Perth and joined Deloitte in 2008!
What do you think makes Deloitte a great, rewarding, and inspiring place to work?
At the very core of Deloitte's culture is the belief that we exist to make a positive impact for our people, our clients and our community. How inspirational is that? This belief connects with my values and is my anchor at Deloitte. It inspires me to move forward with boldness, empathy and a sense of purpose.
I am passionate about coaching and supporting our people throughout their life at Deloitte. I would like them to experience the many positive interactions I have had in my 14 years with the firm. I look forward to providing many others the platform and opportunity to elevate, amplify and make a difference (big or small).
Tell us about an exciting learning and development opportunity you've recently participated in…
I have been fortunate to be part of a number of leadership programs at Deloitte (Deloitte Business Woman of the Year, Shaping your Leadership Potential, Deloitte Partner Program, Mentoring). Each of these programs was pivotal in helping me develop a better sense of who I am as an individual, the impact I could be making with clients and the people around me and, more importantly, shaping the type of leader I could and want to be.
And lastly… If you could go back in time, what tip would you give to your younger self about building your career?
Have aspirations and dreams, stay curious - never stop learning, be kind to yourself and most importantly, surround yourself with leaders and teams that inspire you to be better.
