Helping distressed businesses reduce risk and maximise value

Our specialists combine industry expertise with advanced data analytics to:

  • Quickly understand why a business is underperforming
  • Identify effective recovery strategies, and
  • Deliver the best outcome.

We draw on Deloitte’s global network of 1,500 restructuring professionals, as well as sector and technical specialists, to help us deliver expert advice. This makes us the world’s largest corporate restructuring practice within a full services firm.

It also means we can handle a very wide range of complex issues, including turnarounds, capital restructures, rapid mergers and acquisitions, and all forms of formal insolvency appointment, including receiverships, liquidations, and voluntary administrations.

Our team starts by assessing distressed situations via a strategic review before developing options to maximise return and reduce risk. These options might encompass turnaround advice, capital and debt restructuring initiatives, or planning and executing managed exits from businesses. We can conduct lending reviews, act as a ‘qualified entity’ to provide safe harbour advice, develop contingency plans for formal appointments and more.

How we can help

We typically work with the boards, management teams and stakeholders of larger corporates to:

  • Assess distressed situations via strategic reviews and develop contingency plans
  • Act as administrators, receivers, and liquidators in a formal insolvency process
  • Develop options based on our expertise and by harnessing advanced data analytics and visualisation tools
  • Develop rapid cash generating techniques (including working capital improvements) so organisations have time to implement options
  • Conduct lending reviews and obtain buy-in from key stakeholders such as banks, drawing on Deloitte’s extensive network of relationships with financial services organisations
  • Implement restructuring initiatives. This might include negotiating contracts and new finance arrangements and providing assistance with redundancy programs or accelerated M&A
  • Raise debt at competitive rates and on competitive terms
  • Reduce the administrative burden from unwieldy corporate structures through managed exits
  • Act as a ‘qualified entity’ to provide safe harbour advice.

With small and medium businesses, our team can also:

  • Advise on voluntary administrations, liquidations, and other insolvency options
  • Advise on informal turnaround situations.

Working with stakeholders such as banks, our team can:

  • Conduct customer reviews, including assessing situations and recommending options to maximise recovery
  • Act as receivers and/or agents for the mortgagee in possession if a secured debt is enforced
  • Provide advice on debt restructures.

Working with investors, our team can provide:

  • Strategic reviews with options to maximise return and reduce risk, in distressed situations
  • Due diligence and strategic advice to investors considering buying distressed assets or assets out a formal insolvency procedure
  • Assist with the rapid disposal of assets, in distressed situations
  • A managed exit to reduce cost and manage risk, where needed.

In the public sector, our team can provide organisations with:

  • Advice on the veracity of any party that an organisation is dealing with. That might include advice on creditworthiness and reputation, or how to contract with other parties to reduce risk
  • Strategic reviews, and helping to transform and improve government departments and government-owned corporations
  • Formal insolvency appointments of companies that owe money to the government or are being wound up as part of a regulatory procedure (such as through Australian Securities and Investments Commission surveillance activity or Australian Taxation Office debt collection activity).
