Africa’s future is not defined by its challenges alone, but rather by the power of hope that resides within its people.

We launched our inaugural Purpose Festival to advance our mission of ingraining sustainability and purpose-driven culture within our firm. Held in November 2023, the festival engaged our people across the continent, raising awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals and their relevance to the professional services we deliver and our impact on society. Activities included learning sessions, client case studies, spirited debates and a talent showcase.

Digital literacy for teachers in Kenya

Recognising the digital literacy gap hindering teachers, Deloitte Kenya empowered 25 high school teachers through a digital literacy webinar. This initiative equipped educators with valuable insights on leveraging technology for better learning outcomes, including e-learning integration for more engaging experiences. Teachers gained knowledge about digital skills needed for student success in the workforce and explored career options within the digital economy. This initiative empowered the teachers and their 13 000 students, bridging the digital divide and preparing them for a future increasingly driven by technology.

Deloitte Namibia champions literacy

Deloitte Namibia’s flagship literacy programme at St Barnabas Primary School was launched in 2024. The programme features a three-year reading initiative and library refurbishment project aimed at boosting English literacy rates. Enthusiastic Deloitte volunteers are actively involved, demonstrating their commitment to our Purpose through educational empowerment. The initiative has impacted over 1 000 students since its inception.

YES e-learning optimisation Initiative

To combat South Africa’s high unemployment rate, e-learning platforms are becoming essential for upskilling youth. E-learning specialists at Deloitte developed and applied a comprehensive review template to evaluate the Youth Employment Service (YES) learning platform. The findings were presented to YES Leadership during a Masterclass on Volunteer Day 2024.

This initiative showcased the range of expertise in the Deloitte Workforce Development team, highlighting their commitment to quality and relevance. The team of developers, media experts, tech experts, and instructional designers collaborated to enhance the content, ensuring it met the learning objectives, accessibility standards, and market relevance.

Feedback from the Masterclass will help YES optimise its e-learning materials, benefiting 16 000 active users and over 140 000 alumni. The initiative contributes to building an economically advanced Africa powered by a quality, equitable, and educated workforce.

Empowering Nigeria’s youth through financial literacy and STEM knowledge

Deloitte Nigeria collaborated with Teach for Nigeria and Beige Africa on Volunteer Day to equip over 3 000 students with essential financial literacy and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills.

This initiative provided students with financial literacy through interactive lessons on budgeting, saving, and financial planning. The experience also encouraged an interest for STEM through hands-on activities and real-world applications, showcasing diverse career opportunities in these fields. Our Deloitte volunteers mentored the students, guiding them on career goal setting and navigating career paths.

As part of our commitment to contributing positively to the markets that we work in, we sponsored the first South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) Fellowship in Financial Journalism. The aim of the fellowship is to improve the financial literacy of journalists to better understand critical economic issues and the context of the broader market when reporting. It consists of a formal academic programme enhanced by master classes with key stakeholders such as regulators, private sector leaders and government.

We started working with the International Olympic Committee (IOC)  and the Local Organising Committees in Africa in 2024, to help the IOC realise the possibilities of its Olympic Agenda 2020+5 and drive initiatives related to sustainability, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and support athlete career transition and wellbeing.

The SME Business Interaction Series was announced in August 2023 with Access Bank, seeking to address the challenges faced by SMEs in Ghana. As knowledge partners of the series, we aimed to equip SMEs through capacity-building clinics, workshops, business advisory services, networking opportunities, access to markets, and financial support.

∞The Deloitte Enterprise and Supplier Development  programme was established to align with our firm’s transformation strategy and to fulfil our Purpose of making an impact that matters within our ecosystems and value chain. This programme aims to accelerate the growth of small, micro, and medium enterprises (SMMEs), capacitating them through internal skills transfer initiatives, providing support to secure new business opportunities within and outside the firm. We equip SMMEs to become potential subcontractors or preferred suppliers and integrate seamlessly into our firm’s supply chain.

We learnt that beyond capital investment, hands-on support is critical to the success of this programme. To ensure a sustainable and meaningful impact on the SMMEs, we have increased our employee hours, leveraging their professional skills to implement various skills transfer initiatives effectively. This approach ensures that the businesses we support receive the comprehensive assistance they need to thrive and grow.

In a recent partnership with Aquaid Lifeline Fund, we delivered training on sustainable farming practices for small-scale farmers. Our goal was to provide knowledge to address the adverse effects of climate change. We also aimed to improve income and food security through effective livelihood diversification and technology transfer.
