If you’re video conferencing with Megan Pattie and you spy what appears to be a donkey in the background, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. Megan’s office just happens to be on her family’s farm in the Shenandoah Valley, where sheep, goats and two adorable miniature donkeys roam.

Having grown up in the suburbs of Dallas, Megan admits that the rural lifestyle was a leap of faith. That ability to leap comes naturally to Megan, who’s earned a reputation within Deloitte’s talent acquisition team for her fearlessness. She’s undaunted by challenging assignments that help her discover her impact. When tasked with recruiting candidates with a “really, really niche skill set that actually didn’t exist,” she quickly developed an innovative and impactful solution for training talent to meet the client’s needs.

Still, it took more than fearlessness when Megan and husband, Marshall, began growing their family. While pregnant with son Archer, now almost 12, Megan was diagnosed with a heart defect that required immediate surgery and subsequent bed rest. She was again placed on bed rest for much of her pregnancy with son Abram, now 10. Throughout these trying times, Megan was grateful for the health care resources, Paid Family Leave program and caring colleagues at Deloitte. And she didn’t miss a beat when she returned to her same role at work after each leave.

In recent years, Megan and her husband realized their family was not yet complete, as they had always dreamed of becoming foster or adoptive parents. They had just completed training and home studies through social services when Marshall’s colleague told them about an infant who needed a loving home. Nearly overnight, their family expanded to five, and they’re currently pursuing formal adoption. Megan says Deloitte’s Adoption Reimbursement Program provided financial assistance for the adoption and legal fees (and the ease of submitting these for reimbursement) lifted a significant burden. Additionally, the Paid Family Leave provided a crucial bonding time when baby River came home.
