"As we work towards our global commitment to reach net-zero by 2040, our Sustainability Goals are more important than ever. Everyone has a role to play in embedding sustainability into everything we do."
Phil Richards, UK chief operating officer and WorldClimate sponsor
We’re accelerating our commitment to net-zero, bringing it forward to 2040 – a decade earlier than our previous target. Everyone at Deloitte has a vital role to play in this transformation. By leveraging our unique skills, we can drive the systemic change needed to achieve this ambitious target.
That’s why, for the first time, we integrated a Sustainability Goal into the performance review process to empower all UK colleagues to contribute to our net-zero journey.
Gavin Harrison, head of Sustainability, emphasises the importance of individual contributions: “Our people are key to achieving net-zero. Our Sustainability Goals challenge everyone to identify how their role can accelerate our efforts and to take ownership of that change. With 26,000 people across the UK working together, we can supercharge our efforts.”
Our people are committed to protecting the planet and seek to be part of the solution. This translates into actions such as reconsidering travel habits, joining our network of Climate Champions and, importantly, supporting our clients and industry peers to embrace broader climate action.
The Sustainability Goal encourages UK colleagues to advance their knowledge, identify opportunities to play their part and lead confident conversations on sustainability. This will create a ripple effect, engaging our clients and suppliers.
Climate change can be a complex topic, so a strong foundation of understanding is crucial. Throughout the year, colleagues, including all new early career joiners, were invited to attend interactive webinars and workshops.
James Jones, an IT project manager, prioritised knowledge building: “My goal was to enhance my understanding of and engagement with our net-zero agenda within my department by leading informed discussions in team meetings throughout the year.”
Resources were created to support our people to embed sustainability considerations across a project and hold confident climate conversations.
Caitlin Ford, from our Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory team, facilitated a sustainability workshop with a client, directly targeting the project’s carbon footprint. “Using Deloitte’s Travel Emissions Calculator,” Caitlin explains, “we projected the engagement’s travel emissions and collaborated with the client to identify opportunities to reduce these, such as by increasing virtual meetings.” Similarly, Emily Bryant, executive assistant, focuses on booking more sustainable travel options, prioritising train journeys over flights for her team where possible.
With increased awareness and practical tools, our people are driving impactful conversations and sparking change across their networks. Dain Robinson, a manager in Workplace Services, says, “My goal was to enhance the sustainability of our facilities and catering operations through driving environmental understanding, engagement and accountability with key suppliers.”
Within our Audit & Assurance and Tax & Legal businesses, James Williams, audit director and Claire Galineau, tax associate director, developed informative seminars with the Climate Champion Network, equipping teams with the Sustainable Delivery Framework to encourage sustainable choices in all aspects of client work.
Our Sustainability Goals unite us in our net-zero ambition and recognise the efforts of our people. Every individual action contributes to meaningful change, demonstrating that even small steps, taken together, can achieve extraordinary results.
