The second paper in our series with InsurTechNZ explores how New Zealand’s Open Insurance ecosystem can work together to implement Open Insurance through greater coordination, standardisation, and collaboration.
Open Insurance allows customers to securely share and access their insurance data, creating more transparency, simpler interactions, and more proactive protection throughout the insurance lifecycle. In New Zealand, Open Insurance is coming, whether by design or by default. While insurers currently have control over scope, standards, and governance, they can define the terms of Open Insurance, or they’ll risk the market operating through disjointed bilateral arrangements and offshore platforms.
The blueprint for Open Insurance proposes assigning a “centre of gravity” for the industry supported by a range of specialist working groups to guide decision-making, coordinate standards, prioritise investments, and manage the transition from individual initiatives to shared market infrastructure.
Drawing on international experience and input from industry leaders, this paper sets out principles for strengthening customer trust and consent, data and interoperability standards that work across multiple technologies, and a partnering model for Open Insurance.
