I chose to do my internship in the Dublin office, even though I studied in Cork and am originally from Tipperary, because I wanted to experience a new city. I’ve never once regretted that decision. While the work was completely new to us as interns, the environment was incredibly friendly, supportive, and welcoming.
Mentorship is a key part of Deloitte’s culture. This is clear through the buddy system and the assignment of a coach, which gives interns access to support at two different levels. This structure was extremely beneficial throughout the internship.
Social events such as sports clubs, volunteering initiatives, and Learn Fest activities offered great opportunities to meet people across various teams and levels of experience. These interactions helped build relationships that are invaluable when thinking about your long-term career. It’s not just about handing out your CV. It’s about being remembered as someone who is curious, hardworking, and enthusiastic.
You will quickly learn what it truly means to be a professional, something that cannot be taught in a lecture or textbook.
Dressing appropriately is a common concern for incoming interns, but you soon learn what is considered normal and when it's acceptable to dress more casually or when more formal attire is expected, such as during client meetings. Another vital skill is professional communication. You will learn how to write concise, well-structured emails, format your work clearly and professionally, and navigate meetings and calls with confidence.
These skills may seem small, but they make a big difference. Whether you are applying for graduate roles or working on final year group projects, you will be the person who gets things done, communicates effectively, and presents yourself professionally.
This internship is like a test drive for your future career. It helps you gain clarity on what kind of work you enjoy, what your strengths are, and the type of environment you thrive in. By the end, you will have a better idea of whether Deloitte or any of the Big Four is the right long-term fit for you. You will also better understand which graduate programme suits your interests, whether that’s Audit, Tax, Consulting, or another area. Most importantly, you’ll know who you can contact to learn more about the different service lines and career paths
Enjoy every minute.
You will meet people who could become lifelong friends, even if you never work together again. Networking and building real connections are a key part of the internship.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Especially from your buddy, who was in your shoes not long ago. Introduce yourself early, and don’t hesitate to reach out. Many associates are happy to answer questions, no matter how small. If you think someone else on your project can help, just ask.
Be yourself.
You are not expected to know everything, or even anything. What matters most is your enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Interns come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and there is no specific checklist of knowledge you need before joining. Authenticity is a powerful quality. One of the best parts of the experience is meeting different people from all over the country.
A positive attitude, a sense of humour, and a strong work ethic will take you far. If you move to a new city for an internship, like I did, make the most of it. It is a great chance to bond with others, explore your surroundings, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. Spend your evenings getting to know people on a personal level and enjoying what the new area has to offer.
