Giki (Get Informed Know your Impact) is an exciting and engaging evidence-led climate change initiative that was introduced to Deloitte in April 2023. This carbon footprint application is already having a huge impact in terms of allowing us to proactively manage our individual carbon emission reduction.
“Busy people are sometimes frustrated or overwhelmed that they don’t have the time to make a noticeable impact on climate change and carbon emissions reduction,” points out Caítlín Flanagan, WorldClimate Lead for Deloitte Ireland. “But Giki is all about the power of small changes – and providing the inspiration to help people make a start on reducing their carbon footprint.”
“Though it’s a Deloitte NSE (North and South Europe) initiative, it has a particularly strong resonance in Ireland, where we’ve taken a leadership position in communication and engagement levels for our people, utilising Giki to support and measure the impact of their actions,” says Flanagan.
Giki is an app and web-based, and lets people get a real-world score on the climate change impact of various carbon emission reduction actions that they take throughout any given period.
One of the big plus points of the programme is that it can be used for gamification and setting of team or unit challenges. The programme also converts carbon savings into terms that can be easily understood. For example, savings over a particular month can equate to a specific number of short-hop flights.
Deloitte have run a number of themed challenges throughout the year to encourage our people to commit to actions that had a collective impact of avoiding 321,758kg CO2 of emissions. These actions can be something as simple as leaving the pots on your lids when you're boiling them or changing to an eco-setting on a dishwasher.
Adding simple easy-to-do steps such as changing your default web browser to Ecosia will see a tree planted for every 50 searches or so. We are proud to say that in the first two months of launching this option, we've had 2,500 trees planted, just from our people making online searches.
One sustainability champion in the business, Ezgi Bayram in Technology & Transformation, who won the February Giki challenge themed ‘waste less’, explains the impact it has had: ‘'This Giki app challenge has inspired me to prioritise sustainability further. As a result, I've decided to start going to work on my e-bike, which I won during the challenge. It's a small step, but I believe every action counts in contributing to a more sustainable future.’’
