Immigration News December 2025

Improvements for offshore work permits

Effective 6 November 2025, the Danish government has improved its work permit scheme for offshore employees, allowing greater flexibility with multiple entries during a single permit period.

This month’s update concerns improvements for offshore employees temporarily stationed on vessels within Danish territory.

Non-EU nationals working offshore in Danish territory can apply for a work permit under the “Mobile workplaces at sea” scheme, which offers an alternative to the standard work permit options.

Effective 6 November 2025, the government has introduced changes designed to increase the flexibility of these work permits. The key update allows foreign nationals to have one or more interruptions to their stay in Denmark within the permit’s validity period, provided the role and employment conditions remain unchanged. This means that employees can leave and re-enter Denmark multiple times during the duration of their work permits, without needing to apply for a new work permit. Previously, any interruption required a new application for a residence and work permit.

The permit can, however, still only be given a validity of six months at a time.

The main benefits of this change include:

  • Employees on rotational assignments no longer need a new work permit for each working period.
  • Cost savings on work permit fees and reduced logistical challenges planning for biometrics appointments.
