EU Anti-Money Laundering (AML) package

EU sets new standards in the fight against money laundering

The EU Commission is pursuing a clear goal with the EU AML package: standardised, stronger rules against money laundering and terrorist financing throughout Europe. Most of the new rules were announced in July 2026 and will apply from 10 July 2027. Swiss banks are directly or indirectly affected.

Overview

The EU AML package is transforming European anti-money laundering efforts: From 10 July 2027, a unified single rulebook will apply instead of fragmented national laws.

The four core changes:

  • Harmonisation: An EU regulation with direct effect supersedes national law. Binding standards from the AMLA for all member states.
  • Relevance to Switzerland: Swiss financial intermediaries are directly and indirectly affected and must adjust governance, processes, and systems.
  • Digitalisation as an Opportunity: Data-driven risk models enable more modern, effective, and cost-efficient compliance.
  • Central Supervision: The AMLA establishes uniform expectations and reduces scope for interpretation, resulting in greater clarity and less complexity.
  • Call to Action: With about 18 months until implementation, early action is crucial. Gap analyses and implementation planning should start now.

"From mid-2026, the EU will implement a harmonised regulatory framework across all member states. As service providers in a highly interconnected financial centre in the heart of Europe, Swiss financial intermediaries must also anticipate the direct and indirect impacts in a timely manner and make appropriate adjustments."

"The new EU regulation relies heavily on digitalisation and data-based risk models. This also offers financial intermediaries in Switzerland the opportunity to modernise their compliance and make it both more effective and more cost-effective."
