Julia’s growth journey in SR&TA

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at Deloitte.

After studying economics, gaining experience working in start-ups, and spending plenty of time rowing on lake Zurich, I chose the professional services industry to accelerate my learning curve and delve into M&A. Several people recommended Deloitte for its positive work culture, particularly within my current team.

Four years into this journey, I may no longer wake up at 5:30am every morning to row on Lake Zurich, but I thoroughly enjoy working with colleagues I consider friends – on projects where I can contribute and grow alongside exceptional people.

What types of projects and clients have you worked with? How have they helped you to develop your skills and level of expertise?

I have worked on transactions across various sectors, including healthcare, industrials, and consumer goods. Some projects involve small factories or young companies that are being sold, while others relate to SMI companies carving out a brand or business unit. Early on, I had the chance to work on bigger and more complex carve-out transactions, where I leveraged my experience in data handling from my economics background.

For me, the learnings are as diverse as the projects and companies. I continue to develop my expertise by leveraging previous experiences, pushing a little bit further each time, and asking the right questions.

What training and development programs have you participated in so far? How have they helped you grow professionally?

At each grade level I had the opportunity to join a bootcamp where we spent a week in Stoos connecting with people from across the Swiss firm, tackling various challenges and participating in diverse seminars.

Alongside these firm-wide trainings, there are regular technical training sessions within my cohort, which help build the necessary expertise to advise our clients on M&A specific topics. Each grade level is further complemented by various trainings focused on developing social skills.

How would you describe your team culture and environment?

Having the right culture is crucial for high performance. It powers our daily project work and facilitates meeting deadlines. In my experience our team values an honest and collaborative approach to work. To foster this, we regularly organise team events and enjoy Friday drinks or lunch breaks together.

In our team we specialise in due diligence, so we know that mistakes happen; what matters is identifying, resolving, and communicating them sensibly.

Regardless of whether it's the Partner, project lead, or engagement manager, everyone is approachable and eager to share their knowledge or to provide inputs. Although some projects demand intense work hours, we prioritise output and have the freedom to work flexible hours outside of scheduled client calls.

What qualities or skills do you think are important to have, to succeed within SR&TA?

In my experience, curiosity and an open mind are vital qualities. Because we collaborate closely with colleagues across teams and clients, it's important to enjoy being part of a varied team and to remain flexible in the roles we take on within it.

Working in SR&TA at Deloitte is a great opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of clients and industries, build a strong professional network and access a wide variety of learning opportunities.
