Health Insurance Switzerland

Premium Situation 2025

Health insurance premiums will rise at an above-average rate for the third time in a row in 2025. However, many policyholders will feel an increase of more than the officially communicated 6 percent. Deloitte has analysed the development of health insurance premiums and finds, for instance, that the lowest monthly premiums for adults will rise by an average of 8.8 percent.

In light of the sharp rise in premiums, Deloitte conducted a representative survey between August and September 2024 - i.e. shortly before the upcoming increases were announced - and asked about the willingness of policyholders to switch insurance and their general satisfaction with their health insurance. The results show that 34% of those surveyed are considering changing their health insurance provider and an additional 20% are considering adjusting their insurance model or deductible this year.

The financial situation of health insurers has also changed. Between 2019 and 2022, Swiss health insurers were able to curb the rise in premiums by counteracting rising healthcare costs by reducing financial reserves. However, their solvency has suffered as a result: three years ago, the industry as a whole still had a solvency ratio of 207%. At the beginning of 2024, this figure was only 121% and the health insurers’ room for manoeuvre appears to have been exhausted. Some insurances have even slipped below 100 percent.
