Deloitte’s commitment to environmental Sustainability

Climate change is not a choice. It's billions of them.

In Canada, our vast natural resources place us in a unique position to take positive climate action. That's why we're committing to impact that matters against climate change. We recognize change starts within.

Mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change are monumental tasks. The climate crisis is a risk to society at large, to our organisation and to our clients across the private and public sectors. Progress is possible and we must take urgent action, acting collectively and individually to make changes to help reduce our Greenhouse gas emissions. Deloitte is helping to lead the way toward a low-carbon future by guiding our clients on their Sustainability journeys, advancing meaningful actions and change within our own operations and supply chain and collaborating with non-profits and civil society.

The shift towards a net-zero economy is imperative as we mitigate future risks, meet the expectations of our stakeholders and support the continued prosperity of the communities we serve. Deloitte is dedicated to playing a leading role in helping drive this transition to a sustainable future.

Reducing Deloitte’s own emissions

Deloitte demonstrates its commitment to climate action through our WorldClimate ambition and net-zero by 2040 target. In 2020 Deloitte set near-term science-based targets and in 2024 we added long-term targets. Deloitte’s net-zero by 2040 target is inclusive of our near- and long-term targets and has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Our net-zero by 2040 target is consistent with the Paris Agreement goal to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Climate change doesn't look the same to everyone. Our Bringing carbon down to earth report will equip governments and businesses with the tools to collaborate and place Indigenous voices at the forefront of Canada's climate initiatives.

WorldClimate

Deloitte launched WorldClimate—our global strategy to address climate change by driving responsible climate choices within our organization and beyond. Deloitte’s near-term and net-zero (2040) greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as 1.5°C-aligned, science-based targets using the SBTi’s Net-Zero Standard.

We will also connect with others, empowering our professionals and engaging our broader ecosystem to create solutions that facilitate the transition to a low carbon economy. We believe the future of our people, planet, and profession depends on the business community taking measurable, decisive action on climate change. This is what our stakeholders and our professionals expect of us, and it’s what we should expect of ourselves as responsible global citizens.

The opportunity to create a more sustainable world is at our collective fingertips. Our actions make a difference, no matter how large or small.

Our commitments:

Our near-term targets:

  • Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 70% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.
  • Reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from business travel 55% per full-time equivalent employee by 2030 from a 2019 base year.
  • Engage with our suppliers to have 67% by emissions set science-based targets by 2025.

Our long-term targets:

  • Reduce absolute scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2040 from a 2019 base year.

Additional environmental sustainability goals:

  • Source 100% renewable energy for our buildings by 2030.
  • Invest in meaningful market solutions for emissions we cannot eliminate.

We recognize we must align our climate policies, practices, and actions across our organization. We’re doing this by:

  • Incorporating sustainability into decisions on office operations, events/meetings real estate, and investments
  • Prioritizing discussion of climate action on executive agendas

Making an impact on the climate crisis not only relies on what our business does, but on the individual decisions we make each day. We engage and educate our people on climate change impacts to drive responsible decision making about what they consume, use, or how they travel. We enable our people to make positive climate choices at home and at work, which in effect can influence others in their personal networks.

Empowering our people to take climate action at Deloitte through the Green Champions Network.

We will collaborate with clients, alliance partners, non-governmental organizations, industry groups, suppliers, and others to address climate change at a systems and operations level.

Our FY24 Progress

Our sustainability transformation

Each industry will require business transformation to reach net-zero, including the professional services industry. Deloitte is implementing policies and transformation programmes to reduce our emissions 90% by 2040. This means reducing the emissions arising from how we work, the technology we use to do our work, the offices in which we work, and more.

Deloitte’s supply chain is the largest source of our emissions. Through targeted supplier engagement efforts, we continue to influence our suppliers to set SBTs, we collaborate with them on emissions reduction, and we work together to advance product-level emissions reporting. Our dedicated sustainability team within procurement directly supports our efforts to reach our near- and long-term targets across the supply chain lifecycle, from supplier selection to contracting and engagement.

Deloitte is also committed to supporting its people and the broader community to take collective and individual action and to make responsible climate choices. While the journey will be complex and unpredictable, we are committed to embracing these challenges head-on and working collectively toward a sustainable future within our organisation and with our clients and suppliers.
