The Yard: Strategical Challenges

In today’s complex supply chains, yards face critical strategic challenges: limited visibility into asset movement, inefficient use of resources leading to congestion, reliance on error-prone manual processes causing operational friction, lack of integrated data hindering proactive decision-making, and significant cost leakage through demurrage, detention fees, and security vulnerabilities.

In today’s intricate supply chains, the yard is no longer a logical afterthought, but a strategic bottleneck or a source of significant competitive advantage. Efficient yard management is mission-critical for seamless flow within your distribution network. However, the reality for many organizations is a yard plagued by inherent challenges that erode efficiency and inflate costs.

What is SMART Yard Logistics

Yard Logistics is a smart management solution that optimizes the movement and storage of goods within your facility. It helps you organize, track, and efficiently manage inventory in warehouses and distribution centres with real-time visibility and automated workflows. By reducing bottlenecks and minimizing handling costs, Yard Logistics speeds up order fulfilment and helps your team work smarter.

It functions as a central integration bridge, seamlessly connecting transportation planning from SAP TM, warehouse execution from SAP EWM, and core business processes from SAP S/4HANA.

SAP Yard Logistics sits at the center of your logistics ecosystem, acting as the integration hub connecting transportation, warehouse, and enterprise systems. SAP TM feeds loading and unloading instructions directly into yard activities for synchronized execution.

SAP S/4HANA provides the foundational master data and business context that keeps all yard processes enterprise-wide aligned. External partners connect via the SAP Logistics Business Network, allowing carriers and suppliers to self-schedule dock appointments and reduce administrative overhead. On the output side, SAP EWM synchronizes internal movements and dock door operations with truck arrivals and departures for maximum throughput.

Real-time visibility delivers end-to-end monitoring from gate-in to gate-out, giving stakeholders actionable control over operations. Planning and execution capabilities manage all yard requests, orders, and tasks to optimize resource utilization across the yard.

SAP Yard Logistics covers three core L4 processes. At Check-In, vehicles undergo arrival and ID validation, with options for self-check-in, automated gate control via RFID/ANPR, and prerequisite checks such as DAS/TM appointment validation. During Yard Movements, tasks are managed through move and shunt operations, executed via mobile Fiori apps with real-time tracking, right-zone assignment, and a graphical yard cockpit dashboard. At Check-Out, all tasks are validated, services and billing are recorded, a final security gate pass is issued, and vehicles can self-check-out or exit through an automated RFID/ANPR gate.
