Matching ambition with execution

Advanced therapies continue to progress across Europe, supported by scientific innovation and regulatory activity. Yet the route from discovery to patient use remains challenging. Industrialisation, clinical evidence, manufacturing readiness and access now matter as much as the science itself.

Belgium enters this next phase with recognised strengths in clinical research, particularly in oncology, rare diseases and early-stage studies. However, trial start-up timelines remain under pressure and international competition is intensifying. Maintaining a strong position will therefore depend on focus, coordination and the ability to act quickly.

The report highlights four areas with particular potential:

• Cell therapies in oncology and haematology
• Gene therapies for rare diseases and advanced paediatrics
• Specialised manufacturing, release and logistics
• A clearer route from academic innovation to scalable development and patient access
  

Creating the conditions for progress

Realising this opportunity requires joined-up action across research, industry, healthcare and government. Priorities include faster trial activation, stronger CMC and manufacturing support, connected treatment centres, improved follow-up data and pragmatic access pathways.

The report proposes a shared national direction, a stronger international profile and expanded support for academic innovators and emerging biotechnology companies. Milestone-driven funding, collaboration between Flanders and Wallonia, digitalisation and AI-driven approaches can further help promising therapies advance more efficiently.

By concentrating resources where they can have the greatest effect, Belgium can become an attractive European launchpad for selected ATMPs and strengthen its broader life sciences position.
