Meet Julia Hodgkinson, one of our Brisbane Health Partners, sitting in our Financial Advisory business. Julia specialises in financial sustainability across her health clients.
How did your passion for healthcare start and what was the motivation for pursuing a career in healthcare?
I've always been attracted to the idea of using my restructuring background in areas of social impact. I was lucky enough to work with Deloitte’s Health Lead Partner, Luke Baxby, on my first health project after returning from a stint overseas. I just loved it! It's so relevant to me, my family, my friends, and the broader community.
Could you provide a brief overview of your professional journey leading up to your current role?
I started my professional career as a graduate in the Deloitte Restructuring Team. I worked across various industries on both formal insolvency and advisory projects. Over time, I gravitated towards financial performance improvement as a way to help companies and people avoid the distress of financial failure. I moved overseas for five years and worked as a contractor, in debt restructuring and finally in a bank. On returning to Australia, I decided I wanted to use those restructuring skills in a different environment and was attracted to the public sector and finally specialising in health. I became a Partner in 2015 and these days deliver both financial performance and infrastructure advisory services across public and private clients in the health sector.
What skills and capability do you bring to transform health?
Financial and commercial skills. An ability to deliver commercial outcomes, in a manner and context that's appropriate for our health system.
What sort of Health projects do you work on at Deloitte?
Some of the most impactful projects I’ve worked on have been around supporting the Australian Government with their COVID response, working with health and hospital services on their financial performance and development of business cases, pre-major capital works, funding model reviews as well as activity, revenue, and workforce optimisation.
What impact are you looking to have on the sector and what is your vision for the future of healthcare?
I know the sector needs to do more with less and I am committed to supporting a system based around outcomes and leveraging the benefits that technology and AI can provide - while never losing the human factor.
