The Deloitte network’s net-zero by 2040 target

Climate change is not a choice. It's billions of them.

Mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change are monumental tasks. The climate crisis is a risk to society at large, to our organisation and to our clients across the private and public sectors. Progress is possible and we must take urgent action, acting collectively and individually to make changes to help reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Deloitte is helping to lead the way toward a low-carbon future by guiding our clients on their sustainability journeys, advancing meaningful actions and change within our own operations and supply chain, and collaborating with nonprofits and civil society.

The shift towards a net-zero economy is imperative as we mitigate future risks, meet the expectations of our stakeholders and support the continued prosperity of the communities we serve. Deloitte is dedicated to playing a leading role in helping drive this transition to a sustainable future.

- Joe Ucuzoglu, Deloitte Global CEO

Reducing the Deloitte network's own emissions

The Deloitte network has set a worldwide target to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040. In September 2024, the Deloitte network’s target received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The Deloitte network has committed to a 90% reduction in GHGs by 2040 from a 2019 base year across business operations and value chain and will remove the remaining 10% of emissions through the purchase of permanent carbon removals.

The Deloitte network has committed to long-term net-zero by 2040 and Deloitte Africa will contribute to achieving this. It is recognised that the long-term target is ambitious and will require systemic transformations and action by third parties outside of the Deloitte network’s control. Progress against this target is monitored annually at a Deloitte network level.

The Deloitte network's near-term targets:

  • Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 70% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.
  • Reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from business travel 55% per FTE (full-time equivalent employee) by 2030 from a 2019 base year.

The Deloitte network's long-term targets:

  • Reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2040 from a 2019 base year.
