Why examine the lunar economy, and why now? 

A new space race is emerging, focused not just on returning to the Moon, but on establishing a sustained presence there. Water ice at the lunar South Pole could eventually support the local production of rocket fuel and oxygen, while reusable rockets and commercial launch services are making the Moon more accessible.

These developments are converging with rising investment, commercial ambition, and geopolitical competition. Unlike in past eras, when government programs led the way, commercial organizations now play a much larger role in advancing lunar activity. Together, these forces are shifting the central question from whether humanity will return to the Moon to what becomes possible once we stay.

Reaching the lunar surface is only the first step. Sustained operations will depend on six interconnected infrastructure systems: transportation, energy and power, communications and navigation, surface mobility, construction, and life support.

Transportation
Commercial providers are turning lunar transportation from a series of one-off missions into shared, repeatable services. As activity grows, this shift could lower barriers to access, supporting a market for moving people, cargo, equipment, and eventually lunar materials between Earth, cislunar space, and the Moon’s surface.

Energy and power
Much of the Moon experiences approximately 14 Earth days of darkness each lunar cycle. Solar arrays, radioisotope systems, fission surface power, and energy storage could help lunar missions move from surviving the night to operating continuously through it.

Communications and navigation
The Moon has no cellular network, GPS constellation, or shared time standard. Building that infrastructure will be essential for connecting people, vehicles, and equipment across the lunar surface and back to Earth.

Surface mobility
A sustained lunar presence will depend on moving people, cargo, and equipment efficiently across steep, unprepared terrain. Autonomous rovers and industrial vehicles could become the workhorses that connect landing sites, habitats, and critical infrastructure.

Construction
New construction techniques could make it possible to turn lunar regolith into the infrastructure needed for long-term activity. Landing pads, roads, berms, shelters, and habitats built from local materials could reduce reliance on materials and supplies from Earth.

Life support
Living on the Moon will require far more than shelter. Spacesuits, radiation protection, water and oxygen recycling, medical systems, and resilient habitats must all function in one of the most unforgiving environments humans have encountered.

Together, these systems could represent a US$282 billion present-value opportunity through 2050.

History shows foundational infrastructure often creates value its builders didn’t initially anticipate. GPS, for example, was developed as a military navigation capability before becoming essential to transportation, agriculture, finance, logistics, and everyday life.

Lunar infrastructure could follow a similar path, unlocking six areas of opportunity that extend well beyond individual missions:

National security
As activity expands beyond Earth, cislunar space is becoming a new strategic domain. New sensing, communications, and domain awareness capabilities could reshape how governments monitor, secure, and operate between Earth and the Moon.

Lunar data and services
Every lunar mission will generate vast amounts of data. Imagery, environmental measurements, mission-performance data, communications, and navigation services could support customers in government, research, entertainment, advanced manufacturing, and other industries.

New resources and materials
The Moon holds resources that could reshape industries on Earth and in space. Among these, helium-3 is being explored for applications ranging from quantum computing to future fusion energy, while lunar water ice could be split into oxygen and hydrogen to produce rocket propellant for cislunar and deep-space missions.

In-space production
The Moon’s unique environment and resources could enable building and producing materials in space, which may support emerging markets such as space-based computing.

Innovation and scientific discovery
Building for the Moon will require breakthroughs in robotics, energy, communications, medicine, and materials science. Those innovations may find applications on Earth—from remote construction and resilient communications to advanced energy systems, materials, and medical manufacturing.

Human inspiration
The greatest impact of returning to the Moon may be impossible to measure. A sustained lunar presence could inspire a new generation of scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and ideas whose impact reaches far beyond the space sector.

What’s at stake depends on where you sit. For governments, space companies, industries beyond space, and society more broadly, the potential benefits—and the risks of being left behind—look different. A thriving lunar economy is not guaranteed. The engineering challenges are substantial, timelines are long, and many commercial business models have yet to be proven.

Decisions made now may determine who establishes the infrastructure, standards, partnerships, and capabilities on which future activity depends.

For governments
The infrastructure funded today may set the standards and norms governing lunar activity for decades. Early leadership could influence access, interoperability, security, and the use of strategically important locations and resources.

For space companies
Companies gaining traction are designing for multiple customers, building interoperable systems, and operating on commercial timelines. In this market, compatibility could become an important source of competitive advantage.

For industries beyond space
The lunar economy will require expertise that already exists in energy, construction, automotive, telecommunications, advanced manufacturing, health care, logistics, computing, consumer products, and financial services. The Moon will likely need more than “space companies.” It will need organizations capable of solving difficult, practical problems across many industries.

For everyone else
The technologies developed for the Moon may reshape industries on Earth. Just as importantly, a generation that grows up seeing a sustained lunar presence as routine may develop ideas and applications that are difficult to imagine today.

Humanity’s return to the Moon is becoming an infrastructure story. This is not only an opportunity for space companies—it could also draw on capabilities from energy, communications, robotics, manufacturing, materials, consumer goods, data, and logistics.
