Agentic AI systems are reshaping organizations. Are you ready?

By: Will Bible, Audit & Assurance Partner and Digital Products Leader, Deloitte & Touche LLP

Talking points

  • Unified agentic artificial intelligence (AI) systems can reshape how enterprises operate and compete.
  • Scaling agentic AI responsibly demands simultaneous transformation across six dimensions.
  • Deloitte’s Audit & Assurance practice can help companies advance their agentic AI journeys by sharing first-hand experience and insights from building connected agentic AI systems.

When did your organization last rethink how work gets done? Not by choosing new tools, but by reconsidering when and how people make decisions and act.

Enterprises using agentic AI are reaching a turning point, which may fundamentally change work in finance, accounting, and business—both deliberately and unintentionally. These autonomous systems can be designed to independently sense, decide, and act, reshaping enterprise operations. Competitive pressure and rapid technological change are accelerating the transformation.

Enterprises pursuing agentic AI transformation will do more than try to improve efficiency; they may redesign how they operate. Scaling responsibly may require transformation across strategy, governance, data, technology, workforce practices, and change management.

Adaptive strategy

Strategic planning separates agentic AI experiments from enterprise-scale adoption based on an enterprise AI strategy. Organizations should move beyond a “use-case bolt-on” approach and responsibly embed autonomous systems by reimagining people, processes, and technology together.

One caution: Agents can amplify broken or inefficient processes. Before introducing autonomy, organizations should structure processes and enrich them with data. However, increasing information flow in one part of a process may overwhelm unprepared downstream processes. For example, if a business outcome must be approved manually, allowing agents to initiate the process will not increase penultimate output. In these cases, organizations would need to redirect more employees to manual approval.

Risk, security, and governance

Agentic systems can deliver value when stakeholders trust them. Organizations should build transparency, usage guidelines, and shared accountability into every stage of the AI agent's life cycle. Because agent autonomy creates new operational and regulatory risks, builders should consider emerging standards in their design today.

As agent ecosystems scale, maintaining human oversight can be increasingly difficult. One promising solution: "guardian systems"—supervisory systems that help monitor, validate, and audit autonomous decisions in real time, enhancing compliance and accountability. Guardians do not have to be reasoning agents – they could be a collection of deterministic rules used to gatekeep, detect and alert human overseers.

Intelligent data ecosystem

Data can improve agent effectiveness. To reason and act reliably, they need access to accurate, context-specific information, from transaction records to real-time operational signals. Fragmented data can create blind spots for agents, which can lead to scaled errors.

But data and agentic design alone are insufficient. Organizations should also infuse human judgment at critical points during a process. As long as systems are designed for transparency and clarity, humans can zoom out beyond specific context and govern agentic systems. Humans should codify repeatable patterns into the guardian capabilities, continually improving the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the agentic ecosystem.

Scalable technology

Agentic systems should interoperate across tools, platforms, and databases, from cloud-native agents to bespoke enterprise solutions. Readiness may require more than computing power. Enterprises are investing in integration patterns, agentic controls, and detailed activity tracking to manage costs, control technology, and identify anomalous patterns. They should also decide how to disaggregate system elements: Excessive aggregation limits rapid adjustment, while excessive disaggregation raises control and management costs. Enterprise-wide principles should balance these trade-offs and support scaling objectives.

“AI agents won't replace the human workforce; they'll redefine it. Human judgment, experience, and critical thinking become essential differentiators as agentic AI embeds in workflows, especially in audit and assurance, where quality is paramount.”

Empowered workforce

AI agents won't replace the human workforce; they'll allow us to redefine it. As agentic AI enters workflows, human judgment, experience, and critical thinking become important differentiators—especially in audit and assurance, where quality is paramount. Greater access to information can elevate the work and increase demands on human judgment and critical thinking.

New roles are emerging, including design and management roles in agent processes, agent governance, and agent supervisors, primarily focused on guiding, governing, and collaborating with digital agentic coworkers.1

Change management

Agentic transformation often demands continuous, adaptive change management — not a one-time rollout. Today’s environment makes this harder than ever: Employee willingness to support organizational change has dropped from 74% in 2016 to just 44% in 2024, and 54% of workers are concerned about the blurred lines where human work ends and machine work begins.2 Organizations should rebuild trust, clarify the human-AI relationship, and design for both stability and agility.

The stakes extend beyond the workforce; autonomous systems that touch customers and supply chains can carry real reputational weight. Customer impact and brand trust should be designed from the start.

Deloitte’s Audit & Assurance AI leadership

Deloitte delivers responsible, tested, human-led, AI-powered innovations, addressing complex challenges with practical, trusted solutions. Deloitte’s AI-enabled offerings, combined with extensive industry, domain and regulatory experience, can transform financial complexity into strategic clarity. Deloitte’s approach is grounded in quality, integrity, and transparency. Deloitte understands the complexity of developing and scaling connected agentic systems because we're actively on the front line of building them.

In June, Deloitte launched a unified agentic intelligence network within Deloitte Omnia, our global audit and assurance platform. This connected network brings AI agents together under a single framework to coordinate and execute entire workflows. Building on prior AI investments, the latest Omnia release reflects Deloitte's human-led, AI-powered strategy.
