Employer health plans: Evolving expectations

Deloitte’s findings on the health plan innovations employers are seeking

The US health care market needs are shifting, presenting an opportunity for employer health plans to innovate and grow. Rising health care fees, advancing technologies, and a heightened focus on employee well-being are driving employers to seek solutions that go beyond traditional cost and network considerations. To build competitive advantage, health plans should develop strategies that address these challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities.

Key insights from employee health benefit decision-makers

To understand these trends, Deloitte surveyed chief human resources officers (CHROs) and key decision-makers responsible for employee health benefit solutions. The findings reveal that while core elements such as price and network stability remain critical, employers are increasingly focused on employee well-being offerings, flexible coverage, and a more direct relationship with carriers.

Even strong health plan brands may need to evolve to stand out

Only 10% of the survey respondents selected a carrier based on brand. Given that finding, even carriers with historically strong reputations should demonstrate tangible innovations and cost advantages to retain a competitive edge.
