In our Cyber, Data and Digital team we’re looking for people who have a keen interest in technology and data risk, a desire to learn and grow, and a proactive mindset. Technical experience isn’t necessary, because we want people from a wide range of backgrounds to join us. The work we do spans a huge array of experiences and skillsets. Whether we are on the ground helping the client recover from a ransomware attack, protecting major sporting events from terrorism, increasing awareness of security threats across third-parties, or working with senior leaders to prioritise cyber investments, our focus is on enabling businesses to operate and thrive in an increasingly hostile and complex digital world.

We have lots of roles available within different business areas at Deloitte, with different opening and closing dates for applications, depending on the programmes and locations. However, we do close applications early when we get a very high volume of submissions, so we recommend applying as early as possible.

Deloitte were alerted to an ongoing cyber attack by a client who called our 24/7 incident response hotline. The hacker had gained access to their systems, stolen and deleted terabytes of confidential data, and demanded a ransom payment to not leak the stolen data online. The client has tens of millions of customers around the world and was losing revenue every minute, because critical elements of their website were inaccessible.

Teams from all corners of Cyber, Data & Digital were mobilised – our diversity in knowledge, skills, and experience were essential for the client’s recovery. As soon as we became involved, the client’s losses were minimised due to efforts from the team. Our technical incident responders performed an investigation into the cause of the incident, while our threat intelligence experts monitored the dark web for signs of the stolen data being published. Ultimately, our remediation experts helped contain the breach and bring the attack to a close, allowing the client to go back to their business operations as usual.

Deloitte was asked by the UK Government to provide the COVID-19 National Testing Programme with data and statistics to help them make key decisions. This data would help them to understand the spread of the virus and its impact on vulnerable communities, how to forecast demand for testing kits and reduce turnaround time from the time of booking a test to getting results.

At the time, there were no cyber solutions in place and requirements for what was needed were rapidly changing. Data was highly complex and of variable quality, and the situation was becoming increasingly volatile.

Deloitte deployed a team of developers to construct, scale and maintain an Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Tableau based reporting platform to record data - which became recognised as the single source of truth for COVID related information in the UK, serving up to 3,000 users across more than 75 organisations.

We have launched the Deloitte Cyber Academy, an initiative which aims to inspire, educate and connect society and industry professionals through innovative cyber programmes. A key part of this is our Purposeful Cyber programme, focused on mentoring and education, whilst increasing cyber safety and awareness. For example, we work directly with schools to offer a variety of presentations, challenges and activities, covering multiple cyber topics.

Through this programme we are committed to demonstrating that there is no one ‘type’ of person who can pursue a Cyber career. The workshops we run help to inspire people from all backgrounds and encourage them to apply for technology careers across a wide range of areas.

How do you explain your job to friends and family?

I work in the strategic side of cyber, protecting organisations from cyber-crime and mitigating risks and breaches. I love the variety of projects, clients and industries we work across, as well as being part of a global firm where you can connect and work with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

Tell us something about your job that people wouldn’t know

Many people assume that cyber jobs are solely technical and that you need a degree in Computer Science to work in this field. In reality that’s not the case. You can train in many different areas of cyber depending on your skills and interests. While some of the roles in this field are technical, tech impacts all areas of our lives so there are also sociological, political, economic and legal factors to explore.
