Within Forensic & Financial Crime, there are two key areas where opportunities are available:

Financial Crime Advisory: We are the specialist Financial Crime advisory team, consisting of two key skillset groups:

Our Legislative & Regulatory Advisory experts who help clients evaluate and enhance their financial crime risk management framework, providing bespoke subject matter expertise and execution capabilities to provide concrete and actionable advice to our clients; and

Our Infrastructure & Operations experts who help translate key financial crime requirements into effective business designs by assessing companies’ business models in relation to regulatory changes and their strategic objectives. Their work also involves reviewing the effectiveness of controls, process improvements, and implementation of organisational design.

Financial Crime Technology: We are technology and data analytics experts who employ investigative analysis, financial crime technology, machine learning techniques, and big data tools, to help clients find pioneering ways to transform their data and develop solutions to investigate, monitor, and prevent issues occurring.

We provide specialist finance advice and support for the public and private sector. In this team you’ll be working on projects that have a real impact on the economy, such as the procurement and negotiation of contracts between the public and private sector.

Within M&A there are several hiring areas:

FIG Recovery & Restructuring (R&R): The FIG (Financial Institutions Group) delivers specialist advice to support the stability of banks and capital markets. Within the Recovery & Resolution team, we support our clients through periods of financial stress, including helping them to recover and restructure. You will have the opportunity to work with many different clients, including insurers, banks, fin tech, asset and wealth managers and payment firms.

FIG Mergers & Acquisition (M&A): The FIG (Financial Institutions Group) delivers specialist advice to support the stability of banks and capital markets. Within the M&A team, we advise our clients on their transactions, including buying and selling businesses and assets, debt advisory and transaction structuring.

M&A Technology – M&A Technology provides due diligence on technology and IT functions specifically, as well as cyber. As the world of technology affects our daily lives, this is critical part of the deals process.

Performance Improvement: Performance Improvement supports Corporates and Private Equity in three main areas: cash, financing and performance improvement. We cover three main areas:

  • Our Value Creation Services (VCS) team help clients rapidly improve cash, liquidity, working capital and drive enduring growth and profits in growth, underperforming and turnaround situations.
  • Our market leading Debt & Capital Advisory team help clients with all aspects of their financing, providing independent debt and treasury support and execution to make sure borrowers have best in class financial strength and systems.
  • Our Corporate Turnaround team focuses on bringing financial stability to an organisation and provides pragmatic financial advice and support to management teams to lead and guide them through a successful turnaround

Sport Business Group: We work exclusively on sports assignments, to bring our commercial, financial, regulatory, taxation and business knowledge from the sports sector to our clients.

Transaction Services: Within the core Transaction Services team, we help clients to assess the deals they are involved in. The services we offer are vital in helping organisations evaluate the accuracy of financial information, identify and quantify potential risks and secure better deal value.

TS Post Merger Integrations (PMI) – We help clients with the execution of a deal when they are planning to buy, sell or take-over businesses. The PMI team advises on transactions on both the buying and selling side.

Our Strategy and M&A practice are part of the Monitor Deloitte brand.

  • Shape and deliver enterprise-level changes by advising on transformation through M&A (inorganic growth); working with them to address cost reduction/synergies, capability acquisition, new market entry, knowledge capture, etc.

Within Valuation & Modelling, there are two key areas where opportunities are available:

Business Modelling and Analytics: 

We use financial modelling to help our clients make better decisions and achieve their goals. From day one, you’ll get stuck into real work and start building relationships with senior clients. Due to the nature of this team, we are looking for people with a STEM degree background.

Business Valuations: 

The Business Valuations team uses data analysis, industry and market insight, and commercial judgement to value businesses, before communicating our findings to our clients. If you want the opportunity to work on high-profile projects across Deloitte, both in the UK and globally, this could be the team for you. We are looking for people with STEM or Accounting and Finance degrees for this role.

In the NHS we trust

Deloitte has been supporting The City of London Corporation since 2019 on its Markets Co-Location Programme, which aims to move three central London food markets into one single, high-tech facility in Dagenham, East London. We have supported with the design development, as well as submitting planning applications. The existing markets and their locations are so historic that they are set in law, meaning we have also supported the legal changes needed to move and redevelop them. As part of the project we have worked closely with local councils, businesses, and residents. Meanwhile we have secured outline planning permission, which is a wider consent that allows for more detailed designs to be submitted in future, and we will advise The City of London Corporation on redevelopment plans for the existing sites.

Our world is rapidly changing. Innovation is critical. Everything we do here is built on a culture of constant development and adoption of innovative ideas – be those cutting-edge technologies, or smaller quick wins like automating repetitive processes and developing new working methods.

For example, we’ve developed SMART ID, a technology solution that makes it easier for customers to manage their identity information by reducing the number of places they need to maintain it.

We’ve created a Cloud based solution enabling organisations to manage lease portfolios and calculate vital information to meet legal regulations. And developed a licenced subscription service that tackles complex, and potentially costly, tax reporting requirements.

What advice do you have for others who are keen to start their career at Deloitte?

My advice is to be honest and confident with your answers and background. As an entry-level applicant, you are not expected to know everything about the job or the industry you will work in. What matters the most is that you show you are enthusiastic and eager to learn. My favourite part of the process was my final round interview in which I had the opportunity to meet future colleagues and understand more about the job and Deloitte’s culture.

How do you explain your job to friends and family?

It can be very hard to understand what financial crime is. Sometimes people think the job is similar to the Secret Intelligence Service, but it is actually quite different. When I tell friends and family about my role, I compare the job to consulting. We highlight issues and help our clients make changes and improvements accordingly. All you need is your problem solving and analytical skills, and to be enthusiastic!

What learning opportunities have you had at Deloitte?

I joined Deloitte as a BrightStart apprentice, which meant I could learn and develop skills on the job at the same time. Whatever level you’re at when you join, there are an abundance of learning opportunities. As well as a thorough induction process, where you learn about your service line and the different opportunities on offer, there are also online learnings, in-person training courses and networking events. In the office, you are surrounded by skilled colleagues who are eager for you to learn and are willing to aid you whenever required.

What do you enjoy about your job?

Working in financial advisory, and in particular transaction services, every project is different. This allows you to develop an updated range of skills every time you work on something new. As an apprentice, you’ll also get the chance to explore businesses in a range of different industries, which encourages a well-rounded understanding of the work we do. I am based in the Manchester office, which is a great city environment, but with a smaller office, which creates a nice sense of community. There are also plenty of opportunities to go down to the London office and network with those in other locations, including new joiners and more senior team members.

I found it pretty smooth. It mainly focused on my skills to work independently as well as part of a team. I’d always advise anyone preparing for the application process to do some research into the role you’re applying for and also to ask questions in your interview.

Is there anything you’ve been particularly surprised by since joining?

I’ve been surprised by how much of a team spirit there is within my office and service line. I thought that, given the size of the firm, it would be difficult to find that. But the reality is that I’ve become part of a great and supportive team who are genuinely invested in my development.

Tell us about your job and the best things about it

Our Products & Solutions team sits within Deloitte’s Forensic Technology department. We use innovative technology to solve complex issues for our clients, specifically in the financial crime and regulatory fields. Which includes developing new software products.

The best thing about my job is having access to cutting-edge technology, such as cloud services, and getting involved in the full software lifecycle, as well as being in an environment where I can continue to develop my skills. That’s something that really motivates me. Every day I learn something new and increase my technical skills.

Isn’t it all just work, work, work?

The social side of Deloitte is great, being able to go on socials after work with my team, but also wider teams in the company, is a great way to meet new people, get involved and increase my network – but also have fun!
