Moonpig Group’s sustainable future

An advanced tech solution to boost ESG reporting

Playful cards, serious sustainability

Behind Moonpig Group’s playful brand and iconic jingle lies a deep commitment to sustainability.

Pledging to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, with clear milestones set for 2030 to ensure accountability and momentum, Moonpig Group is taking steps to operate as sustainably as possible.

In response to evolving customer expectations and growing regulatory demands, Moonpig Group recognised the need to future-proof its sustainability strategy. This meant bringing together data sources, streamlining reporting workflows, and creating a reliable single source of truth.

A team from Deloitte worked together with Moonpig Group to implement an integrated carbon and sustainability reporting solution using Workiva, enabling its people to track, manage, and report progress with confidence.

Freeing up teams to take climate action

Moonpig Group, the pioneering online greeting cards and gifting platform, helps people celebrate the moments that matter.

It’s also playing a role in building a more sustainable future.

Initiatives such as sourcing sustainable paper and funding large-scale reforestation projects — planting thousands of trees — highlight Moonpig Group’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.

Its made-to-order production model helps eliminate unnecessary waste, while localised printing in regions like the UK, Netherlands, Ireland, Australia and the USA significantly cuts emissions linked to transportation.

To reinforce these initiatives and keep pace with ESG regulations, Moonpig Group decided to enhance its sustainability reporting.  Its aim was to take an integrated, technology-led approach to data management that provided clear visibility of its carbon footprint, enabling teams to spend more time driving climate-positive actions.

“We’re committed to low operational emissions via energy-efficient, renewable-powered sites,” says Danilo Vassari, group sustainability manager at Moonpig.

“Our largest impact lies within the supply chain, and we’re proactively engaging suppliers to align with our Net Zero ambitions."

A forward-looking data platform

To support its sustainability goals, Moonpig Group set out to implement a forward-looking data platform that would improve audit readiness and build a strong foundation for scaling environmental initiatives over time.

Moonpig Group selected Workiva as its technology partner to deliver a robust and adaptable ESG reporting solution, building up on Moonpig Group’s existing use of Workiva for financial reporting.

“Moonpig Group needed a unified view of its emissions and other ESG data,” says Renard Teipelke, a senior manager at Deloitte.

"Our goal was to co-design efficient, user-friendly processes that would meet the company’s operational and compliance needs.”

Deloitte worked closely with internal teams to ensure a smooth implementation, also providing sustainability advisory services that included supporting Moonpig Group’s double materiality assessment and climate risk strategy.

"We configured the solution to handle data ingestion, aggregation, and reporting across internal and external audiences," Renard explains. "Granular controls were built in to support increasing assurance expectations."

The Workiva solution went live within 11 weeks — a rapid timeline made possible by focused collaboration and shared ambition.

A greener future

Moonpig Group now benefits from a unified, end-to-end view of its sustainability performance via two integrated Workiva modules: one for carbon accounting and one for broader ESG disclosures, which are also connected to their financial reporting in Workiva.

This platform enables efficient data collection, deep analysis, and comprehensive reporting. Traceability features allow every data point to be tracked from source through to provider and approver, supporting audit readiness and compliance.

The solution is already making a big contribution to Moonpig Group’s growing business by enabling:

  • migration of three years’ of emissions data into a centralised system, providing for better insights and decarbonisation planning;
  • alignment with emerging regulatory frameworks and voluntary disclosure standards;
  • use of automated templates and tools for data submission across geographies; and
  • enhanced collaboration, a reduced administration burden, and improved data accuracy and traceability.

"Workiva’s platform has streamlined how we collect, calculate, and report our sustainability data," Danilo concludes.  "It improves accuracy, boosts efficiency, and offers flexibility to evolve alongside regulation and technology."

“We’re proactively engaging suppliers to align with our Net Zero ambitions.”
