Champions of change

Through our WorldClimate transformation, we’re empowering our people to take action to help build a better future. And at the heart of this is a community of North and South Europe (NSE) Climate Champions who are inspiring us to make more sustainable choices, at work and at home. Here, four of them share their stories.

Meet Claire Galineau. Climate Lead, Clause Zero campaigner, and arts superfan

“For me, climate champions represent the link between our strategy and people. We take our colleagues’ and clients’ experiences, solutions and challenges to our WorldClimate team and have a conversation around our transformation to net zero and what it means for individuals.”

An Associate Director in our UK Tax and Legal practice, Claire focuses on sustainability and environmental taxes, so joining the Climate Champion community was a natural move. As Climate Lead for Tax and Legal, she manages 20 other climate champions.

What inspired you to become a Climate Champion?

Thanks to my day job, I was a Climate Champion even before I got involved in the network.

For me, climate champions represent the link between our strategy and people. We take our colleagues’ and clients’ experiences, solutions and challenges to our WorldClimate team and have a conversation around our transformation to net zero and what it means for individuals. I really enjoy having people to bounce ideas off.

Domenico Frascati believes in leaving the world a little better than you found it.

“I got involved with the Climate Champion network based on curiosity at first – but I’m surprised and proud of the impact I’m now making with this community!”

Domenico is an ESG Data Strategy and Transformation Consultant within our Deloitte Climate and Sustainability (DCS) team. Based in Milan, he helps clients to manage and report their sustainability information, using technology-based solutions.

What has being a Climate Champion taught you?

When I first became a Climate Champion, the WorldClimate team in Italy had just launched a challenge about digging into the detail of sustainability issues and personal development. I enrolled in some interesting online courses on some of the most relevant sustainability-related topics for me such as ESG reporting, sustainable supply chain management and the implications of AI for sustainability. I also took part in a volunteering activity at the largest fruit and vegetable market in Italy focused on food waste, which taught me a lot about the scale of the issue and the actions needed to reduce waste.

Being a Climate Champion has been a great opportunity to connect with colleagues from other NSE Geographies, whom I can draw on to gain valuable insights in the most effective ways to approach sustainability challenges.

He may be one of our newest climate champions, but this isn’t uncharted territory for Kevin Reynolds.

"I’m passionate about climate change and sustainability. I have a great love of the outdoors and I’m a father of three, so the effect of the climate crisis on future generations really concerns me."

Starting with a 23-year career at Deloitte Ireland, Kevin is a senior IT manager, leading end user computing, networking and digital adoption. And when it comes to climate action, he’s a long-time advocate.

What impact are you hoping to have?

I hope I’m already impacting things. The big one has been around our virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). This is used across our global network of delivery centres, including in India and Romania, where people connect using virtual desktops and it enables the scale and breath of our work. I’m part of a team migrating VDI in data centres across NSE into a cloud environment. By doing this we’re aiming to reduce energy consumption by around 40%.

Magali Abdessater is an advocate for all things ESG.

“When you’re empowered there are no limits to your potential.”

Magali’s 14-year Deloitte career has taken her from Lebanon to New York, and now Abu Dhabi. Previously a financial auditor, she made the move two years ago to support our clients in capturing the impact of ESG on their businesses, disclosures, and financial statements under our Sustainability Assurance and Reporting practice for Deloitte Middle East.

What does being a Champion mean to you?
It’s about spreading awareness, wherever you are and in whatever you are doing, because small things can be part of something bigger. For me it’s how I can maintain my lifestyle and still uphold my standards.

I talk a lot about shifting practices to adopt sustainable approaches such as contributing to the circular economy with sustainable fashion.
