Participation and access for equitable screening

Breaking down barriers to cancer screening

1 in 2 people will get cancer in their lifetime in the UK and unfortunately UK cancer outcomes are not where they should be. Cancer screening is a vital lifesaving service which helps to catch cancer early and improves health outcomes. However, screening rates vary across the country with much lower rates of uptake among people living in high areas of deprivation and minority ethnic populations. This results in significant inequities with regards to access and Cancer outcomes.

We know that solutions exist that can improve screening uptake. With greater access to data, it is possible to increase the use of risk stratification and design more participation-friendly services. Also new communication channels could improve engagement with the public. Implementing and scaling up proven methods would help save lives and lead to cost savings for the NHS.

Our report explores how to break barriers to cancer screening to increase participation and access.

To discuss the findings of the report, Deloitte hosted a webinar on Participation and Access with Dr Karen Kirkham (Chief Medical Officer and Partner in the Deloitte UK Healthcare Team), Naser Turabi (Director of Evidence and Implementation, Cancer Research UK), Kathy Nelson (Head of Cancer Network at NHS Bedfordshire Luton & Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board) and Thorsten Engel (Partner in the Deloitte UK Healthcare Team). Get key insights from the webinar through the video recording below and synopsis of the discussion.
